Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Matt Hilleary scored a team-high 17 points and Will Morley added 16 to lead fourth-ranked Catholic past Gettysburg 69-57 in the championship game of the 2003 CUA Pepsi Classic in men’s basketball action on Sunday.

Hilleary, an All-American center in 2002, converted 7-of-11 shots from the floor and also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to earn tournament most valuable player honors and lead the Cardinals (9-1) to their 10th title in the 16-year history of the Classic. Adam Dickman added nine points and dished out seven assists in the win.

David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) led all players with 19 points while Doug Loveland (Oceanport, NJ/Christian Brothers Acad.) added a career-best nine for Gettysburg (6-6). Both were named to the all-tournament team.

Catholic used a run in each half to claim the victory, taking a 20-5 lead to open the game and answering a second-half Bullet surge with an 18-4 stretch to seal the win.

Hilleary started both runs, scoring on a strong post move to open the game and adding a put-back for a quick 6-0 lead. Morley stuck a 17-foot jumper and Kevin Wise converted a breakaway layup before Morley scored on a tough driving layup to make it 12-0 just 4 minutes, 14 seconds into the game.

Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) stopped the run with a layup to get Gettysburg on the scoreboard and Loveland drilled a 3-pointer to pull the visitors within 14-5. Craig Avallone answered with a pull-up jumper before Blair Mills and Will Jawando knocked down two free throws each to stake Catholic to a 20-5 lead midway through the first half.

The Bullets fought to within 10 points on four separate occasions, but couldn’t pare the lead to single digits until Ryan Page (Silver Spring, MD/St. John’s College [DC]) converted a steal-and-layup with 51 seconds left to make it 32-24 heading into halftime.

Consigned to the bench for the first half’s final 11:10 after taking two quick fouls, Glaser came alive after the break, drilling two 3-pointers to key a 10-3 run that pulled Gettysburg within 37-34 with 16:12 remaining.

Hilleary, however, scored on the Cardinals’ next trip down the floor, touching off an 18-4 burst over the next 6 minutes, 41 seconds that pushed the lead to 55-38 with 9:31 left. Wise and Dickman each drilled 3-pointers during the run while Hilleary capped the stretch by finishing a fast-break layup.

Page finished with eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals while Brady added seven points and six boards for the Bullets.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at Elizabethtown. Game time is 8 p.m.
