Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Mike Schwalb (Bernardsville,
NJ/Pingry School) rushed for two touchdowns and Nick
Nocar (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) connected on an 85-yard
scoring strike to Bryan Wheatly (Lancaster, PA/Manheim
Twp.) as Gettysburg defeated McDaniel 30-20 in Centennial
Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.
Schwalb scored on a pair of two-yard
runs in the midst of a 20-point second quarter that helped
the Bullets (4-1, 1-0 CC) snap a six-game losing streak to
the Green Terror (2-3, 2-1 CC) and open conference play with
a victory for the first time since 1996. Schwalb finished
with 77 yards on a game-high 21 carries, part of a Gettysburg
offense that rolled up 279 of its 399 total yards on the ground.
Nocar, who also rushed for a game-high
86 yards, hit Wheatly on a halfback option pass to make it
14-0 early in the second quarter, then dashed 58 yards on
a sweep to set up Schwalb’s second touchdown, putting the
Bullets ahead 27-7 at halftime.
Grant Acker (Howell, NJ/Peddie)
led the Gettysburg defense with a career-high 15 tackles,
reaching double-digit stops for the fourth straight game.
Nathan Smith (Milford, NY/Cooperstown Central)
added eight solo tackles and broke up three passes.
McDaniel freshman Brad Baer
completed 23 of 39 passes for 223 yards and one touchdown,
an 18-yard shovel pass to Joey Ellis that pulled
the Green Terror within 27-14 early in the third quarter.
French Pope and David Posin each
ran for touchdowns in the losing effort. Pope, who scored
McDaniel’s first points on a five-yard run in the second quarter,
finished with a team-high 55 yards.
Already off to their best start in nearly
a decade, the Bullets were able to continue their early-season
success with a win over the six-time defending conference
champions.
Gettysburg opened the scoring with an
eight-play, 80-yard drive late in the first quarter. Following
a false start penalty to open the drive, Joe Gossweiler
(Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) found Gentris
Bryant (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Acad.) on a 35-yard
pass to midfield and Bryant followed with a 12-yard run to
the McDaniel 38.
Nocar’s 10-yard gain moved the ball to
the Green Terror 13 and Bryant scored on an eight-yard run
two plays later to make it 7-0 with 2:53 left in the first
quarter.
On the Bullets’ next possession, Nocar
swept right from the Gettysburg 15, then squared up and fired
a pass to a wide-open Wheatly, who scampered 85 yards to give
the home squad a 14-0 edge just 43 seconds into the second
quarter. It was the third completion of Nocar’s career, alongside
a 51-yard toss in 2001 and a 44-yarder last season. The touchdown
was also the first of Wheatly’s collegiate career.
The Bullets increased their lead to
21-0 with a nine-play, 62-yard drive midway through the quarter.
Gossweiler keyed the march with a 31-yard run to the Green
Terror 19 and a five-yard scamper on third-and-5 to the McDaniel
9. Schwalb scored from two yards out with 6:49 left in the
half.
McDaniel got on the board with a 10-play,
56-yard scoring drive following Schwalb’s touchdown. Ben
Flaherty’s 40-yard kickoff return started the Green
Terror on its own 44 and Pope capped the march with a five-yard
sweep on fourth-and-one to pull McDaniel within 21-7.
The Bullets, however, weren’t finished
for the half. Facing third-and-5 from the Gettysburg 40, Nocar
broke free around right end and dashed 58 yards to the Green
Terror 2. Schwalb found paydirt again on the next play and
the Bullets took a 27-7 lead into halftime.
Touchdowns by Ellis and Posin sandwiched
around a 27-yard field goal by John Edgar (Gettysburg,
PA/Gettysburg), pulled McDaniel within 30-20 early
in the fourth quarter, but the Green Terror would get no closer.
McDaniel went three-and-out on the first
of three scoreless possessions to end the game. Matt
Pinkney (Bowie, MD/Bowie) dropped Baer for a seven-yard
loss on fourth-and-two on the Green Terror’s next drive, then
forced a fumble that Michael Schmidt (Huntington Station,
NY/Walt Whitman) recovered to halt McDaniel’s last
possession with 1:33 left.
Gossweiler finished with 75 rushing yards
on 16 carries, giving him a team-high 299 yards for the season.
Bryant rushed for 40 yards while scoring his team-leading
fourth touchdown.
Bullet safety Mark Johnson (Corona,
CA/Acad. of the New Church [PA]) made seven solo tackles
on the day, surpassing the 100-tackle mark for his career.
Troy Mason led the Green
Terror with 13 tackles.
With the victory, Gettysburg is enjoying
its first three-game winning streak since 1995 and is 3-0
at home for the first time since 1993. The Bullets’ four wins
this season already matches the program’s total from each
of the last two years.
Gettysburg returns to action on Friday
at Johns Hopkins. Game time is 7 p.m.
