ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Not only did Gettysburg win two matches in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Saturday at Muhlenberg against Washington and the hosts to remain undefeated in conference play, but junior Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) also reached a milestone accomplished by only eight Bullets before her. With her 17th kill on the day, tallied in the opening game against the Mules, Cortese recorded her 1,000th career kill. She finished the day with 28 in the two matches to bring her career total to 1,011.
With the pair of sweeps, Gettysburg (18-5, 5-0 CC) also extended its current winning streak to 12, which is the longest such stretch since the Bullets won 24 consecutive matches during the 1997 season.
In the first match against the Shorewomen (2-20, 1-4 CC), Gettysburg was led by an all-around effort from sophomore Joan Nagel (North Wales, PA/North Penn) with six kills, six aces, five digs, and a block solo. Cortese and junior Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) added 10 and six kills, respectively. Cortese also added a pair of aces, while freshman Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) tallied a team-high five blocks. Sophomore Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) added 19 assists, and sophomore Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) added 11. Senior Michelle Dorsch (Frederick, MD/Gov. Thomas Johnson) contributed in the win with a pair of service aces.
The Bullets took game one by a 30-17 final before coming back strong in game two to pull out a 30-14 victory and then finished off Washington with a 30-23 win in game three.
Cortese led Gettysburg in the second match against the Mules (7-15, 0-4 CC) with a double-double (18 kills, 10 digs). Barr tallied eight kills and nine digs, while classmate Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) added 11 kills. Smith contributed 44 assists, and Prutzman recorded five aces and three total blocks. Sophomore Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) also contributed three blocks, and Dorsch added nine digs
The Bullets came out strong in game one winning 30-14 before completing their fourth-straight sweep with 30-20 and 30-25 victories in games two and three, respectively.
Gettysburg returns home on Thursday when they host Swarthmore. Match time is 7 p.m.
