Gettysburg upends No. 15 Muhlenberg to remain perfect in conference

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Gettysburg netted a goal in each half to remain unbeaten in Centennial Conference (CC) play and upset 15th-ranked Muhlenberg, 2-0. Despite only outshooting the Mules 11-10, the Bullets carried play throughout much of the very windy Wednesday afternoon on Memorial Field.

Senior Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) scored the game-winner 18:14 into the contest, and junior Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) added the insurance goal with nearly 15 minutes to play.

The Gettysburg defense held Muhlenberg’s leading scorer, Kristen Bruschi, to no goals on a team-best four shots. Bruschi had scored 14 goals in the Mules’ first 12 games entering the contest.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) recorded seven saves in the cage for the Bullets (8-3, 5-0 CC) to keep her record perfect at 7-0 and record her fourth shutout of 2003. Freshman Lauren Schram tallied six stops for Muhlenberg (10-3, 2-3 CC) in the loss.

Gettysburg dominated play for the first 12 minutes of the game, racking up four shots and four penalty corner before the Mules had their first offensive threat. Following the second consecutive penalty corner by the Bullets, the guests almost came out with the ball, but Gettysburg junior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) stole it back and sent it across to Brown. Brown redirected the pass behind Schram for a 1-0 advantage.

The Bullets continued to carry play and almost doubled their lead when sophomore Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) redirected a pass from senior Amy Ritter (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) off Gettysburg’s eighth corner. Schram, however, made a huge glove save to keep it 1-0.

A long pass the other way less than a minute later set up Muhlenberg’s best scoring chance of the opening half. A pair a shots by freshmen Jessica Hand and Allie Covell, sandwiched Brucshi’s first shot of the game and evened the first-half shot count at five each. However, the Gettysburg defense withstood the flurry of activity, anchored by four diving saves by O’Neill, to preserve the lead.

The Mules opened the second half with the advantage, carrying play as the period opened. A pair of saves by O’Neill in the first five minutes once again preserved the lead for the hosts.

In the 48th minute, Muhlenberg was once again threatening. A pass in from the left side bounced high off the stick of sophomore Adrienne Verbich behind O’Neill, but Ritter was there to knock the ball out and record her first defensive save of the season.

Six minute later it was Gettysburg’s turn to attack again. Following another two penalty corners, Mishler started a long series of passes by sending the ball high to Lowe. Three passes later, senior Kate Hopkins (Oswego, NY/West Chester East [PA]) bounced the ball back out to Mishler, who finished the play and gave the Bullets a 2-0 advantage.

Sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) looked to make it 3-0 less than five minutes later on a fast-break opportunity, pushing the ball by Schram before Sarah Frosdick made a defensive save to keep it a 2-0 game.

Gettysburg recorded another five penalty corners in final five minutes of the game to hold a 21-4 advantage in that category.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Washington (Md.). Game time is noon.
