Baker, Miller lift Washington over Gettysburg, 1-0; Shoremen score first-ever Centennial victory against Bullets

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Tom Baker scored the game-winning goal and Ryan Miller recorded 12 saves to lift Washington over Gettysburg 1-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer action on Saturday.

Baker struck in the 54th minute off an assist from Jimmy Pope to give the Shoremen (7-4-2, 3-2-1 CC) their first-ever win against the Bullets (9-4, 4-2 CC) in conference play. Gettysburg had won its first 10 CC meetings with Washington and was unbeaten in its last 12 games against the Shoremen (11-0-1).

Miller made a nearly half of his dozen stops in the final 20 minutes to preserve his sixth shutout of the campaign and give Washington its first win over the Bullets since a 6-0 decision in 1960. The Shoremen have allowed more than one goal in a game only once in 2003.

Michael Garea (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) fired a team-high four shots for the Bullets, who held a 16-6 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon. Matt Burns (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) and Will Hohman (Landenberg, PA/St. Mark’s [DE]) recorded three shots apiece in the losing effort.

Following a scoreless first half, Baker connected on his team-leading sixth goal of the season to put Washington on its way to the historic victory.

Pope corralled the ball at midfield and started the play with a pass behind the Gettysburg defense. Baker won a footrace with Bullet goalie Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) and deposited the ball across the goal line for a 1-0 lead with 36:30 remaining.

Miller made it stand up down the stretch, lowering his goals-against average to 0.59 in the process.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against St. Mary’s (Md.). Game time is 3:30 p.m.
