Gettysburg drops first conference game of season at Washington

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Gettysburg entered play on Saturday without a loss in Centennial Conference (CC) play. In fact, the Bullets had only given up one goal in conference play all season. However, that all changed with a trip to Washington when the Shorewomen handed Gettysburg a 2-1 loss.

The lone goal for the Bullets (8-4, 5-1 CC) was netted by senior Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) off an assist from classmate Lisa Giljam (Downingtown, PA/Villa Maria Academy).

Washington (7-6, 4-3 CC) got a goal and an assist from Ally Simons in the victory.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and junior Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, Shoreham-Wading River) split time in the cage for Gettysburg. O’Neill started the game and picked up her first loss of the season allowing both goals and making six stops. Dougherty made nine saves in the second half. Zina Hense tallied six saves for the Shorewomen in the win.

After being outshot 11-3 in the first half, the Bullets made the most of one of their five second-half opportunities to cut the deficit in half. With 25:27 remaining in the contest, Brown took the pass from Giljam and found the back of the net to make it a 2-1 game.

Simons tallied the game’s opening goal unassisted with 6:22 gone in the contest.

Midway through the opening stanza, Chelsea True netted the eventual game-winner off a Simons assist to give Washington a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

The Shorewomen dominated the scoring chances, holding a 24-8 shot advantage by game’s end.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at No. 11 McDaniel. Game time is 4 p.m.
