Gettysburg falls to No. 3 Messiah

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – On a blustery fall day at Memorial Field, Gettysburg had its four-game win streak come to a halt when No. 3 Messiah tallied twice in both halves to come away with a 4-1 victory in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday.

Junior Danae Chambers netted a goal in each half for the Falcons (7-1) to extend her team-lead to 13 on the season, while sophomore Aftan Fisher scored off a Chambers assist.

Senior Kate Hopkins (Oswego, NY/West Chester East [PA]) scored the Bullets’ (5-3) lone goal for her first of the year.

Gettysburg goalie, junior Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River), recorded 15 saves, one off her career best, to pick up her third loss of the year. Junior Erica Nelson tended the Messiah cage and tallied two saves to pick up her seventh win of 2003.

The Bullets actually carried play in the opening minutes, and senior Lisa Giljam (Downingtown, PA/Villa Maria Academy) recorded the game’s first shot, but Nelson made the save.

From there, the Falcons carried play through the next 20 minutes, netting their two first-half goals in that stretch. With just under seven minutes gone, Chambers deflected in a pass from sophomore Jenna Schwind behind Dougherty for the 1-0 lead.

Seven and a half minutes later, Dougherty kicked out a shot by sophomore Erin Weaner, but classmate Bethany Fulton was there for the rebound and goal to give Messiah the 2-0 advantage.

Despite carrying play for the last ten minutes of the opening stanza, the hosts were not able to get the ball into the cage. The best threat Gettysburg had was with two and a half minutes remaining in the half when a Giljam line-drive shot was saved, and sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) also hit the right post.

The Falcons controlled the ball in the Bullets’ end to start the second half, but were unable to capitalize until Chambers found the back of the cage at the 44:33 mark. Four minutes later, Chambers drew the keeper out and found Fisher on the back post for the 4-0 advantage.

Messiah continued to carry play in its end until the 65th minute. On one of their few offensive possession of the second half, the Bullets made the trip count. With Gettysburg facing its first potential shutout of the season, junior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) controlled the ball just off the left post and drew the Falcon keeper out before dumping off to Hopkins for the lone Bullet goal.

Despite Gettysburg possessing the ball for extended periods of time, by the time the final whistle had blown, the Bullets could only muster five shots compared to Messiah’s 25, and the Falcons also ended with a 16-9 advantage in penalty corners.

The Bullets return to action on the road Saturday against conference-foe Haverford. Game time is 1 p.m.
