St. Mary's scores in double overtime to defeat Gettysburg, 2-1

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Brian Wolcott netted the game-winning goal just 54 seconds into the second overtime to lead St. Mary's over Gettysburg 2-1 in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday.

Wolcott, who tallied two goals and one assist in a 3-0 win against the Bullets (9-5) last year, scored two goals to help the Seahawks (11-3) capture their 11th victory of the season. Alun Oliver assisted on the game-winner for his team-leading 10th assist of the year.

Sophomore Pete Kareha (Allentown, PA/William Allen) tallied his first collegiate goal while junior Josh Romash (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) recorded his first collegiate assist, both making their first collegiate start on the afternoon.

Both teams struck early in the first half, but only St. Mary's found the back of the net again in the 101st minute to help the Seahawks defeat Gettysburg for the second-straight year.

Off a restart by Oliver, Wolcott gathered the ball in the box and put his low driven shot in the twine for the game-winner in double overtime.

St. Mary's got on the board with its first shot of the first half. Wolcott used his quick speed and feet to beat sliding Bullet goalie Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock) for a 1-0 lead at the 15:39 mark.

Gettysburg responded to the Seahawks goal by doing the same five minutes later. Romash made an overlapping run out of the defense and crossed it from the right side. Kareha was inside the box and headed the ball into the left corner to knot the game at one.

The Bullets, playing without five starters, equally matched St. Mary's in the first half with each team rattling off five shots. In the second half, Gettysburg outshot the Seahawks 10-5, but missed on those opportunities.

David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) intercepted the ball from a throw by goalie Brian Morrison to a defender, but his one-touch shot went wide in the 52nd minute.

With 14:08 left in regulation, Mike Leader's (Hershey, PA/Hershey) point-blank shot off a throw in was stopped by Morrison.

On the next possession, St. Mary's counter attacked with Wolcott and Vincent La Porta stringing passes, before David Reumont sent his shot over the crossbar.

Freshman Jeffery Collmann (Elverson, PA/Twin Valley) and Will Hohman (Landenberg, PA/St. Marks [DE]) each made an attempt into the first overtime, but Collman's header was saved and Hohman's right-footed volley went wide.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Muhlenberg. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
