Gettysburg keeps home-field hopes alive with 2-1 win at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Four days after suffering its first conference loss of the season, Gettysburg traveled to No. 12 McDaniel and used two first-half goals to pick up a 2-1 victory in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Wednesday.

Senior Lisa Giljam (Downingtown, PA/Villa Maria) converted a penalty stroke in the 24th minute of play, and sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Miflin) added the eventual game-winner in the final minute of the first stanza.

Melanie Thompson tallied for the Green Terror (12-4, 6-2 CC) with 6:40 remaining in the contest.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) tended the pipes for the Bullets (9-4, 6-1 CC) and recorded seven saves to pick up her eighth win of the season. Becky Arnold also made seven saves in the cage for McDaniel.

The Green Terror made a late run in the game to challenge a 2-0 Gettysburg lead. In the 64th minute, Thompson finished a deflection off the stick of Dani Unflat to beat O’Neill and cut the Bullets’ lead to 2-1.

Moments later, senior Amy Ritter (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was awarded Gettysburg’s second penalty stroke of the afternoon, but Arnold made the save to keep the game at 2-1.

Giljam’s penalty stroke midway through the opening stanza slid to the right of the McDaniel keeper to open scoring and give the Bullets a 1-0 advantage.

Seidel made it 2-0 entering the break when she tallied off an assist from senior Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) with 27 ticks left in the first half.

The Green Terror had opportunities down the stretch but could not capitalize.

Both teams recorded a matching 13 shots and 11 penalty corners on the game.

With the victory, Gettysburg keeps its hopes alive of hosting the conference tournament in two weeks. The winner of Saturday’s contest at No. 15 Ursinus, currently unbeaten in conference play at 7-0, will have the inside track on home-field advantage in the playoffs with a week remaining. Game time on Saturday is noon.
