Box Score vs. Haverford
WESTMINSTER, Md. With a sweep over Bryn Mawr
in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Saturday
at McDaniel, Gettysburg secures a place in the conference tournament.
The Bullets
(24-5, 8-0 CC) were also leading in the match against Haverford,
2-0. Gettysburg had defeated the Fords (19-6, 6-2 CC) in games one and
two 30-17 and 30-22, respectively. The Bullets held a 28-20
advantage in the third game before play was suspended due
to a medical emergency in the stands.
Against
the Owls (7-18, 0-10), juniors Jessica
Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield)
and Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) led the Gettysburg attack with nine and
eight kills, respectively. Cortese
also tallied a career-high 10 aces and added six digs. Sophomore
Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) added a career-best in aces with seven to go along with
27 assists and a team-high seven digs.
The Bullets
cruised in game one 30-17 before Bryn Mawr
put up a valiant fight in game two falling, 30-24.
Gettysburg regrouped and took game three by a 30-18 margin to win
the match, 3-0.
In the suspended
match against Haverford, Cortese
had already tallied a double-double after just two games
(11 kills, 11 digs), while Smith had 40 assists. Barr recorded
seven kills in the first two games and joined Cortese atop the squad with two aces.
Senior Michelle Dorsch (Frederick, MD/Governor
Thomas Johnson)
notched 10 digs in games one and two, and freshman Hillary
Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) recorded three total blocks.
With their
8-0 conference record, the Bullets have not only secured
a spot in the CC tournament in two weeks but also hold their
own fate for home-court advantage. With a win in the suspended
match against the Fords and a win in the final conference
match at Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg
will secure the top spot. Should the Bullets falter in either
outcome and end tied with Johns Hopkins at 9-1, they would
host because of a victory in head-to-head competition.
After
the final day of conference play, the Fords conceded the
third game to give Gettysburg a 30-20 win in the final game
and a victory in the match.
Cortese
ended the match with 17 kills and hit .630 to go along with
her 11 digs. Barr finished with 10 kills and seven digs,
