COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. Joyce Anne Koubaroulis broke a 1-all
tie in the 42nd minute to help No. 15 Ursinus
remain unbeaten in conference play and defeat visiting Gettysburg
2-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on
Saturday.
The Bears (13-5, 8-0 CC) used a goal from Amanda Young in the first 50 seconds
to open scoring. Senior Amy
Midgley added a pair of assists.
The lone goal for the Bullets (9-5, 6-2 CC) came unassisted
from senior Carrie
Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) at the 2:15
mark.
Gettysburg goalie, senior Jessy ONeill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy), made a career-high 22 saves in a losing effort. JoAnne Barbieri
made four stops for Ursinus in
picking up the win.
With 28:44 remaining, Koubaroulis
took a pass from Midgley and slipped
it past ONeill to break a 1-all deadlock and give
the Bears the victory.
Ursinus got on the board early when Young took a pass from Midgley in games opening minute.
Brown countered a minute and a half later she found the
cage for her team-leading eighth goal of the season to even
the game at 1.
Sophomore Bridget
Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor
Miflin)
led the Bullets with three shots, while Brown tallied two
of Gettysburgs seven total shots on the day compared to 32 for
the Bears.
Ursinus also held a 23-7 advantage in penalty corners, including
17 in the second half. Jackie
Kram had a penalty stroke
with 2:15 to play, but ONeill made the stop to keep it a
2-1 game.
With the victory, the Bears hold the advantage on hosting
the CC playoffs in two weeks. The Bullets need a win in
one of their two final conference games to secure a spot
in the tournament.
The Bullets returns to action when they host Dickinson on Tuesday. Game time is 3 p.m.
