Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. A goal by senior Caroline Gouin in the games
16th minute was all the offense Dickinson
needed to defeat Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on
Tuesday.
Despite a flurry of offensive activity in the last 10
minutes of the game, the Bullets (9-6, 6-3 CC) could not
find the cage to suffer their first shutout of 2003.
Tara McFadden
made nine saves in the contest for the Red Devils (8-9,
4-5 CC), but only one came in that closing stretch. Defensive
saves by Becky
Harker and Michelle
Coughlin turned away the Gettysburg attack and sealed the win for the visitors.
Senior Jessy ONeill
(Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) made nine stops between the pipes for the Bullets in
the losing effort.
Senior Carrie
Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) and sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Miflin)
had three shots apiece to lead the Bullets.
Gouins goal came unassisted at the 15:24 mark off a penalty corner. Off the Red Devils
third corner of game, she got the ball on the left side
and slid it by ONeill for the 1-0 lead.
Both teams played evenly through the first 15 minutes
with neither team gaining an edge. Gettysburg opened play with three straight corners, but had only
two shots to show for it.
Dickinson had a chance to make it 2-0 entering the break, but
ONeill stopped three Red Devil shots in the last minute
and a half of the opening stanza to keep it a one-goal game.
Dickinson opened the second half with a definitive advantage in
play that saw the Red Devils take three shots and four penalty
corners in the first five minutes of the second half.
After McFadden kicked out a Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville)
shot in the 46th minute, Dickinson countered in a one-on-one opportunity. Gouin picked up a pass at midfield and dribbled down the left
side, but Gettysburg sophomore Jamie
Heeneke (Pennsauken, NJ/Moorestown) broke up the threat at the top of the arc.
Three minutes later, Seidel collected the rebound off
a Jocie Eberle (South
Portland, ME/South
Portland) shot, but missed everyones stick with her cross.
In the 56th minute, Lowe broke all alone for
the cage, but McFadden sent the ball out to protect the
lead.
Six minutes later, Brown broke down the left side looking
for the equalizer. McFadden was there to stop the initial
shot, though. Brown collected her own rebound and got the
ball behind McFadden; however, Harker stepped in front of the cage to preserve the advantage.
The Bullets had one last opportunity in the final minute,
but Coughlin was there to make the defensive save on a Seidel
shot.
The loss marks the third consecutive year that the Red
Devils have defeated Gettysburg. All three victories have been by a 1-0 final margin.
The Bullets have yet to clinch a playoff spot in the
CC tournament next weekend. Gettysburg
needs a win over Bryn Mawr on
Saturday to secure the fourth and final slot.
The Bullets returns to action on Thursday at No. 16 Lebanon
Valley. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
