Gettysburg battles McDaniel to 1-all final; Bullets keep CC playoff hopes alive

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. - John Ward (Elysbury, PA/Southern Columbia) made a career-high eight saves and Garrett Bruno (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) tallied his first collegiate goal as Gettysburg and McDaniel battled to a 1-all tie in Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer action on Thursday.

Bruno scored the lone goal for the Bullets (9-6-1, 4-3-1 CC) to end their four-game losing skid and snap the Green Terror's (13-5-1, 5-2-1 CC) six-game winning streak.

Matt Wolfe tallied McDaniel's goal while Andrew Wu made eight saves.

After splitting the last two meetings, both teams came out focused and hungry, but neither could net the game-winning goal to end at a standstill.

Gettysburg took the advantage early in the first half when Bruno scored off an Andrew Maynard (Reading, PA/Exeter) assist. Bruno's shot deflected off Wu's hands and into the upper-right corner in the sixth minute to give the Bullets a 1-0 lead.

The battle continued for 84 minutes, with Gettysburg holding an 8-4 edge in shots. In the final seconds of the second half, McDaniel rattled off three shots and found the back of the net just as time had expired.

Matthew Smellie (Kingston, Jamaica/Phillips Academy [MA]) cleared the Green Terror's corner kick with 25 seconds left in regulation, but McDaniel kept the ball alive and knocked it back into the box. Thomas Kane and Todd Knepper had their shots saved by Ward amongst a scramble at the six-yard line, before Wolfe slipped the ball into the lower left corner simultaneously with the buzzer sounding.

Both teams missed on several scoring opportunities throughout the game while both goalies made several key saves to keep the opponent off the scoreboard.

Michael Garea's (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) cross found an unmarked Mike Tirney (Springfield, PA/Springfield) at the back post late in the second half, but the Green Terror keeper made the diving stop.

Ward made back-to-back saves on a Brian Samartino shot in the 106th minute and a Thomas Kane header in the 107th minute to preserve the tie.

The Bullets would clinch the final spot in the CC playoffs with a win at home against Dickinson on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
