Lebanon Valley uses big second half to defeat Gettysburg

Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. – A penalty-stroke goal by Lindsey McCormick in the 47th minute broke a 1-all tie and propelled No. 16 Lebanon Valley to a 3-1 victory over visiting Gettysburg in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday.

Freddy Kemper and Jen Selin each added a goal for the Flying Dutchwomen (13-4) to round out their scoring.

Sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Miflin) tallied the lone goal of the afternoon for the Bullets (9-7), which dropped their third straight contest.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) made seven saves for Gettysburg, while Katie Pawlewicz turned away five shots for Lebanon Valley.

McCormick was awarded her penalty stroke 11:40 into the second stanza and lifted her shot into the upper left corner of the cage for the 2-1 lead.

Three minutes later off a penalty corner, Selin took a pass from Fairyn McCleary and slipped it by O’Neill to extend the lead to 3-1.

The Bullets struck early in the contest. Before a minute and a half had elapsed, Seidel found the cage for her third goal of the season. Senior Kate Hopkins (Oswego, NY/West Chester East [PA]) collected a loose ball and slid it over to Seidel for the early 1-0 lead.

The Dutchwomen did not answer until nearly 16 minutes had run off the clock when Missy Shultz sent a ball across the field to Kemper. Kemper redirected the ball behind O’Neill to knot the game at 1-all.

Gettysburg carried play throughout much of the opening half and had two quality chances to tally but were turned away by defensive saves both times.

With 23 minutes left in the half, Hopkins had her shot saved, but classmate Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) collected the rebound and took her first of three shots in the opening half. However, Mallary Anderson stepped in front to prevent the Bullets from taking a 2-0 lead.

Eleven minutes later, Seidel sent a rocket past Pawlewicz from the top-right of the arc, but Amy Saponsky was there to keep it a 1-1 game.

Gettysburg took an 8-5 shot advantage into the break, but the Lebanon Valley defense held the Bullets to just one shot in the second stanza. The Dutchwomen, on the other hand, recorded five to end the game with a slim 10-9 advantage. Each team had five penalty corners in the first half, but Lebanon Valley ended the game with an 11-6 advantage in the category.

Gettysburg finishes the regular season on Saturday against Bryn Mawr at home in Centennial Conference action. The Bullets need a win to clinch the fourth and final playoff spot in next weekend’s conference tournament to be held at Ursinus. Game time is 1 p.m.
