Gettysburg remains perfect in conference play

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Gettysburg put up two first half goals, and the defense held strong in the second half to thwart the Franklin & Marshall attack in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Tuesday. The Bullets (7-3, 4-0 CC) added a second half goal to defeat the Diplomats (6-5, 2-2 CC) by a 3-0 margin.

Senior Kate Hopkins (Oswego, NY/West Chester East [PA]) tallied two of Gettysburg’s goals to bring her offensive total for the season to three goals and an assist.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) made nine stops in the cage for the Bullets to keep her record perfect at 6-0. Michelle Altman tallied 10 saves for Franklin & Marshall in the loss.

Gettysburg got on the board first in the opening stanza when senior Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) played a ball in from the left side. Classmate Lisa Giljam (Downingtown, PA/Villa Maria Academy) redirected the ball behind Altman for the 1-0 lead with less than seven minutes gone in the contest.

In the 22nd minute, Hopkins doubled the Bullets’ lead when she finally got a ball by the Diplomat keeper after multiple failed attempts. Gettysburg continued to carry play for the majority of the first half, but could not extend its lead, taking a 12-5 advantage in shots into the intermission, but only a 2-0 lead.

Franklin & Marshall came out strong in the second half controlling the ball for much of the stanza, but could not get a ball by O’Neill. With 20 minutes to play, the Diplomats had their best opportunity, but Stacey Swymelar’s shot went just wide of the cage.

The Bullet defense came up big less than three minutes later. Senior Amy Ritter (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) broke up a fast-break by F&M that started a play the other way. Sophomore Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) collected a long pass and sent the ball into Hopkins. Hopkins had her initial shot kicked out, but collected her own rebound and found the back of the cage for the final margin.

The Bullets have a week off before returning home to play Muhlenberg on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Game time is 4 p.m.
