Gettysburg snaps skid in big way; Bullets clinch final playoff spot

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) waited until her final home game to record her first career hat trick in the midst of an 11-1 Gettysburg rout of visiting Bryn Mawr in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Saturday.

In addition to snapping their three-game skid, the Bullets (10-7, 7-3 CC) also clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in next weekend’s CC tournament to be held at Ursinus.

The lone goal for the Owls (4-13, 0-9 CC) came from senior Liz Nguyen.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) had one save on the afternoon, facing only five shots. Nicole Huynh made seven stops for Bryn Mawr.

Sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) opened scoring for Gettysburg 3:30 into play. Seidel took a pass from senior Kate Hopkins (Oswego, NY/West Chester East [PA]) off a corner and slid the ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead.

Brown tallied her first and second goals of the day, both of Seidel assists, in the next four minutes to stretch the lead to 3-0.

On a corner at the 9:38 mark, junior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) took a pass from classmate Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown). Lowe sent the shot in from the top-left side of the arc that deflected off a defender’s stick and into the upper-right corner of the cage for a 4-0 lead.

After Amy Ritter (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) scored off a Lisa Giljam (Downingtown, PA/Villa Maria Academy) to make it 5-0, Brown collected her own rebound and found the backboard for her third of the day midway through the first half.

Giljam added a goal at the 21:58 mark to start a stretch that saw the Bullets net four goals in a three-minute span.

Kristen Held (Glenside, PA/Springfield Township) and Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) added a goal and assist each for Gettysburg. Junior Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) tallied once, and freshman Laura Fronduti (Media, PA/Penncrest) netted her first collegiate goal to cap Bullet scoring with 53 seconds left in the opening stanza to take an 11-0 lead.

Nguyen netted the lone Owl goal at the 39:15 mark. Off a restart at the top of the arc, Sarah Weaver sent the ball low where Nguyen collected it and pushed it behind O’Neill.

Bryn Mawr had a chance to make it 1-0 in the first two minutes, but a defensive save by Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) kept the game scoreless.

Gettysburg outshot the Owls 25-5 in the contest, but held a 21-3 edge at the break.

The 11-goal output is the largest offensive tally by the Bullets since recording 12 and 13 in 1960 against Western Maryland and Dickinson, respectively. Both games were shutouts. The last time the Orange & Blue put up double figures was a 10-0 win over Wilson in 1978.

Gettysburg returns to action in the conference semifinals next Saturday in Collegeville. By virtue of a 5-4 Ursinus win over Johns Hopkins, the third-seeded Bullets meet the second-seed, McDaniel, at a time yet to be determined. Gettysburg won the earlier meeting 2-1 in Westminster.
