PITTSBURGH, Pa. On the second day of the Carnegie Mellon Tournament,
junior Nicole
Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) recorded
her ninth double-double of the season to help Gettysburg reach the championship match in volleyball action on
Saturday. Then classmate Jessica
Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) tallied
a team-best 14 kills to give the Bullets (30-5) their third
tournament title of 2003.
Sophomore Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) joined Barr on the all-tournament team after a 4-0 weekend
allowed Gettysburg to extend its current winning streak to 24 matches.
The Bullets last accomplished that feat in 1997. The school
record is 26, attained the season before.
In the semifinal
match against Lycoming (23-9), Cortese
and Barr led the offense with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Smith added 40 assists, while Barr completed the double-double
with 11 digs.
The Bullets
jumped on top of the Warriors early taking the first game,
30-14. Gettysburg finished off the match with 30-22 and 30-27 wins in
games two and three, respectively.
Smith also
tallied three aces and three total blocks, while Barr added
two aces. Cortese recorded three
blocks as well, and Hillary
Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and Erica
Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest)
each added two. Senior Michelle Dorsch
(Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) led the
defense with 12 digs.
In the championship
match against Allegheny (27-12), Barr and Rau added six
kills to the offense, while Smith handed out another 40
assists. Dorsch once again steadied
the defensive effort with 14 digs. Barr added three total
blocks.
Gettysburg started strong once again opening up the match with
a 30-21 victory.
In the second
game the Gators hung tough, but the Bullets were able to
squeeze out a 34-32 win. Erin Barkdoll
(Dover, PA/Dover) recorded a kill down the sideline to push it to 33-32,
and an error by Allegheny gave Gettysburg the game and a 2-0 match lead.
The Bullets
closed out the match with a 30-27 game three win to record
their seventh sweep in the last eight matches.
Barr and
Rau each added two service aces, and Prutzman
notched a pair of blocks to her credit.
The Bullets
return to action when they host the Centennial Conference
tournament next Saturday. Gettysburg will open play against fourth-seeded Haverford. Match
time is still to be determined.
