Gettysburg downs Scranton in NCAA first round to set record for consecutive wins; Bullets advance to play Eastern in regional semis

Box Score

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – Gettysburg used 19 and 13 kills from the junior tandem of Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) and Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck), respectively, to sweep Scranton 3-0 in the first round of the 2003 NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Region volleyball tournament on Thursday at Juniata.

With the win, the Bullets (33-5) set a new program record for consecutive wins (27) while advancing to Friday's regional semifinal against Eastern (32-5), one of only five teams to deal the Bullets a loss in 2003.

Sophomore Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) added 39 assists and 11 digs. Barr completed her 11th double-double of the season by adding 18 digs, while Cortese topped off her ninth with 13 digs.

The Royals' attack was led by Marta DeLong with 10 kills and the defense was steadied by Katie McManus with 16 digs. Cassie Dyer added 23 assists.

Gettysburg had to come-from-behind in all three games to post the victory, but was ultimately successful by scores of 30-28, 30-21 and 30-28.

With game one tied at 10-all, the Royals (21-14) went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. The advantage swelled to 25-20 before back-to-back kills by freshman Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and another kill by senior Michelle Dorsch (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas Johnson) pulled Gettysburg to within 25-23.

Scranton still held a 28-25 advantage late in the game, but a Barr kill gave Cortese the serve trailing by two and the junior served the game's final four points, capped by a final Barr kill for the 1-0 lead in the match.

In game two, the score was knotted at 13-all before a side-out gave the Bullets the one-point lead. Four straight service points by Dorsch, including her only ace of the match, gave her team the 18-13 lead.

Scranton could only get as close as 20-15 down the stretch before Gettysburg pulled away to take a 2-0 lead.

In the final game, Smith served the Bullets back from a 15-9 deficit to take the lead at 16-15. After the two teams swapped points, Gettysburg took the lead at 18-17 on a kill from Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) and never trailed again.

The Bullets built a 24-20 advantage before Scranton clawed back to within one at four different occasions, the last coming at 29-28. Barkdoll notched to final kill to wrap up the match.

Dorsch added 15 digs, while Smith and Prutzman had two aces apiece.

The Bullets face Eastern in the regional semifinals on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
