GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore,
MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) led four players in double
figures with a career-high 16 points to lift Gettysburg over
Delaware Valley 64-49 in the opening round of the Gettysburg
Tip-Off Tournament on Friday.
Jakobe drilled four 3-pointers on the
night, helping the Bullets (1-0) advance to Saturday’s Tip-Off
championship game against Muskingum, a 72-55 winner over SUNY
Geneseo in the tournament’s first semifinal. Gettysburg is
seeking its seventh Tip-Off title in the event’s 13-year history.
Sophomore Matt Whelan (Ridgefield,
CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) added 10 points
in his Bullet debut while Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway
Regional) posted his first collegiate double-double
with 10 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. David
Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) chipped in
with 11 points and nine boards.
Javon Alston paced the
Aggies (0-1) with 14 points off the bench while Kevin
Wright added nine points and four rebounds.
Despite missing its first 11 shots, Gettysburg
held Delaware Valley scoreless for the game’s first 9 minutes,
54 seconds to build a lead it would not relinquish.
After being held scoreless for nearly
five-and-a-half minutes themselves, the Bullets put up the
game’s first six points on layups by Jakobe, Dami Oloruntoba
(Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) and Whelan, making
it 6-0 with 13:32 left in the half.
Following a nearly 10-minute run featuring
six missed field goals and eight turnovers, Randall
Graves got the Aggies on the board with a layup at
10:06 to make it 7-2.
Six points from Glaser and five from
Fromm keyed a 14-5 run that built the Bullets’ lead to 21-7
with 4:46 remaining in the half. An Alston jumper cut the
Gettysburg advantage to 23-16, but Jakobe answered with two
free throws and a trey, helping the home squad take a 32-21
lead into the locker room.
Delaware Valley stormed back with the
first seven points of the second half and stayed within 36-32
on Sean Smith’s layup with 13:22 left.
Jakobe answered with a 3-pointer on the
Bullets’ next trip down the floor, sparking a 12-2 run that
gave Gettysburg a 48-34 lead with 9:02 to play. Glaser followed
Jakobe’s three with a triple of his own before Whelan capped
the burst with back-to-back 3-pointers – the first two of
his varsity career – to restore the Bullets’ double-digit
cushion.
In addition to his 10-point night, Whelan
also recorded five steals and dished out a pair of assists.
Oloruntoba finished with nine points, four boards and three
assists. Gettysburg posted a 42-31 rebounding advantage on
the night while shooting 18-for-24 (75 percent) from the free-throw
line.
