Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) hit the go-ahead free throws with 37 seconds left and Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) blocked a last-second 3-point attempt to seal Gettysburg’s 59-57 win over Muskingum in the championship game of the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday.

Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) led all scorers with a career-high 19 points to earn all-tournament most valuable player honors and help the Bullets (2-0) capture their third consecutive Tip-Off title. Jakobe averaged 14.0 points per game on the weekend to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

Zack Ross led three players in double figures with 16 points for the Muskies, who were held pointless after taking an eight-point lead with 6:18 remaining. Jeff Smallwood chipped in with 11 points while Cole Pittis added 10. Ross and Roy Skidmore were named to the all-tournament squad.

Trailing 57-49, Gettysburg clawed all the way back to the Tip-Off championship without the benefit of a field goal.

Three free throws apiece from Glaser and Fromm, and one charity toss by Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) over a span of 3 minutes, 31 seconds pulled the Bullets within 57-56 with 1:18 remaining.

Skidmore missed the front-end of a 1-and-1 situation with 38 seconds left and Glaser was fouled while hauling in the rebound. The junior captain, held to only seven points on 1-of-5 shooting up to that point on the afternoon, calmly sank both free throws to give Gettysburg a 58-57 lead, its first since the game’s opening minutes.

Muskingum (1-1) missed another free throw and a driving layup before Jakobe hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Bullets a two-point cushion with 4.7 ticks left. Following an exchange of timeouts, Jakobe blocked Skidmore’s last-ditch 3-point attempt at the top of the key to seal the victory.

Running a Princeton-style offense similar to Gettysburg’s, Muskingum used a 10-0 run to take a 15-7 lead in the first seven-and-a-half minutes. Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) drilled a 3-pointer to bring the Bullets within 22-21, but Matt Dansby and Ross answered with treys of their own to give the Muskies a 31-27 lead at the break.

Muskingum led by as many as 10 points when Skidmore converted a layup to make it 41-31 in the opening minutes of the second half. Three-pointers by Jakobe and Chris Pombar (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) pulled Gettysburg within 43-40 at the 12:28 mark, but four points from Pittis and 3-pointers by Smallwood and Ross kept the Bullets at arms’ length.

Smallwood’s jumper with 6:18 remaining gave the Muskies a 57-49 advantage, but the visitors missed their final six field goal attempts and last four free throws down the stretch.

Both Glaser and Oloruntoba finished with nine points and four assists on the day. Glaser also chipped in with six rebounds. Fromm, a sophomore post player, averaged 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in the two games to earn his MVP honors.

Dansby scored eight points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds for Muskingum.

In the day’s consolation game, SUNY Geneseo used a 24-0 second-half run to subdue Delaware Valley, 66-52. SUNY Geneseo’s Joe Zera and Delaware Valley’s Javon Alston rounded out the all-tournament team.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at York (Pa.). Game time is 7:30 p.m.
