Box Score
YORK, Pa. – David Glaser (West Chester,
PA/Malvern Prep) and Erik Fromm (Swedesboro,
NJ/Kingsway Regional) combined for 55 points as Gettysburg
built a 20-point first-half lead, then survived a furious
York (Pa.) rally to defeat the Spartans 79-71 in non-conference
men’s basketball action on Tuesday.
Glaser tied a career-high with 29 points
while Fromm posted a career-high point total for the second
straight game, finishing with 26 to help the Bullets (3-0)
open with three straight victories for the second time in
three seasons. Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie
[NJ]) chipped in with 10 points and a team-high eight
rebounds.
Kenny Fass led three York
players in double figures with 20 points while Steve
Schmehl added 17. Brandon Bushey poured
in 15 points as the Spartans fell to 0-3.
Held nearly eight points below his 2002-03
scoring average in Gettysburg’s first two games, Glaser broke
out on 10-of-12 shooting, including a 4-for-5 performance
from 3-point range, to key the victory.
The Bullets spotted York the game’s first
five points before going on an 18-3 run to take an 18-8 lead
with fewer than six minutes gone. Glaser scored seven points
during the burst while Fromm added five points, one steal
and one block.
Two free throws from Bushey kept the
Spartans in range at 38-30, but Glaser drilled a three, Fromm
followed with a layup and two free throws, and Graham
Shaffer-Rais (Portsmouth, NH/Portsmouth) drained his
lone 3-pointer of the night for a 10-0 run that pushed the
lead to 48-30 with 2:58 left in the first half.
Glaser increased the advantage to 20
with a pair of free throws in the final minute before Brad
Zerfing hit a layup with 18 seconds left to make it
54-36 at the break.
The Spartans dominated the opening moments
of the second half, roaring out of the locker room with the
first 11 points of the half and using a 17-2 run to pull within
56-53 on a Fass layup with 14:24 to play.
Two Fromm free throws and a pair of Glaser
layups restored a seven-point Gettysburg lead, but York rallied
within two on three occasions, the final time coming at 69-67
with 4:48 left following a Fass 3-pointer.
Fromm, however, converted two more charity
tosses on the ensuing trip down the floor, then finished layups
on the Bullets’ next two possessions to make it 75-67. Glaser
followed with the last of his 29 points on a layup with 1:18
left to cap the 10-0 run and seal the win.
Gettysburg shot 60 percent from the floor
in the first half, finishing at 51 percent for the game. In
addition to his 29-point outburst, Glaser also pulled down
six rebounds and tied a career high with four blocked shots.
Fromm continued to build on his strong
early season performance, entering the game off a most valuable
player performance at the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament this
past weekend. The sophomore led the Bullets with 14.5 points
and 8.5 rebounds per game at the tournament.
Stephen Grimes chipped
in with eight points, six assists and five rebounds for the
Spartans.
Gettysburg returns to action on Monday
at home against Messiah. Game time is 8 p.m.
