ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Gettysburg and Johns Hopkins battled to a 1-all tie before the Bullets downed the Blue Jays 6-5 in penalty kicks in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference (CC) women's soccer playoffs on Saturday at Muhlenberg.
Michele Friedmann (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) netted the decisive penalty kick to help the Bullets (12-4-2) advance to their second straight CC championship game. Katie Simmons' (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) second save of the penalty-kick shootout gave Friedmann the chance to deliver the advancing shot. Gettysburg, seeking its first CC title since 1999, while face top-seed and host Muhlenberg on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The penalty kick results were identical for the first five kickers. Each squad made the first, missed the second and scored the remaining three to force a one-by-one, sudden-death scenario.
At the No. 6 spot, Annie Colabella scored when the ball deflected off Simmons' hands. Senior Liz Wesolowski (White Plains, NY/Ursuline) kept the suspense alive, making her shot into the lower left corner to force a seventh round.
Simmons stopped Nikkole Haines for her second save before Friedmann knocked in the final penalty shot to eliminate the defending champions from the playoffs.
Junior Liz Feldhusen (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Regional) gave Gettysburg a 1-0 lead off a Christina DiTucci (E. Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) corner kick in the 31st minute. Feldhusen headed the ball into the upper-right corner of the frame after Jen Goebel made the deflecting save on the play.
Down 1-0 at halftime, the Blue Jays (13-5-2) put the pressure on and knotted the game on their third shot of the second half. Laurie Baumann placed the ball into the top-right netting from barely inside the 18-yard box off a Kathleen Turley assist in the 67th minute.
Neither team was able to capitalize on its scoring chances in regulation of the overtime periods.
Turley took back-to-back shots that went wide, before Jessica McKenzie's shot sailed over the crossbar with less than 10 minutes to play in the second half.
Goebel made a one-handed save on a DiTucci flick with 50 seconds left in regulation to give Johns Hopkins hope for overtime.
Gettysburg is seeking its fifth CC championship and sixth berth in the NCAA tournament. The last time the team accomplished each feat was in 1999. The Bullets fell at Muhlenberg 2-1 when the two teams met during the regular season.
