COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. Three different Gettysburg players
netted first-half goals to give the Bullets (11-7) a 3-2
win over McDaniel in the semifinals of the 2003 Centennial
Conference (CC) field hockey tournament on Saturday.
With the win, third-seeded Gettysburg advances to Sundays championship game against
fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins, who upset top-seeded Ursinus
1-0 in the other semifinal game.
Senior Kate
Hopkins (Oswego, NY/West Chester East [PA]) tallied
two goals and an assist, and Meg
Goddu (Chadds
Ford, PA/Camp Hill) added her fourth game-winner
of the season.
The Green Terror (14-6)
got goals from Kristio Talarovich
and Caitlin Potter.
Senior Jessy ONeill
(Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) made 13 saves. Becky
Arnold made one save and allowed all three goals
in the first 23 minutes of the game. Nicole
Cahill played the rest of the game in goal and made
four saves.
The Bullets struck early in the contest, when Hopkins collected a pass from junior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville)
2:05 into the game.
Talarovich answered in the 10th minute with a goal off
an assist from Melanie
Thompson.
Gettysburg responded with two more goals before the intermission.
In the 14th minute, Hopkins added her second
of the afternoon off a pass from classmate Jocie Eberle (South
Portland, ME/South Portland), and Goddu
recorded the eventual game-winner off a Hopkins assist 14:38
before the half ended.
Potter brought McDaniel to within one off an assist from
Danielle Unflat
with 6:15 to play.
The Green Terror held a 19-13 advantage in shots, and
an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Bullets go for their sixth CC crown at noon on Sunday in Collegeville. Gettysburg won the regular-season meeting with the Blue Jays, 3-0.
