ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Sophomore defender Katie Amari scored the game-winning goal off a direct kick in the 39th minute to lead Muhlenberg to its third Centennial Conference (CC) title with a 1-0 win over Gettysburg in women's soccer action on Sunday.
The Mules (15-3-2), the tournament's top seed for the third straight season, claimed their third CC title in the past four seasons after earning back-to-back crowns in 2000 and 2001.
Sophomore Kristin Igusky (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) tallied a team-high three shots from out of the back while Katie Simmons (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) recorded two saves for the Bullets (12-5-2).
Muhlenberg capitalized on one out of its two opportunities in the first half to post its 12th straight win and second victory against Gettysburg this year, including a 2-1 win in the regular season.
Amari netted the game-winner and her second goal of the season with just 6:57 left in the first half. Rebecca Armstrong drew the foul outside the right corner of the 18-yard box to set up the direct kick. Amari's cross turned into a bending shot that went into the far left-side netting to give the Mules the only goal they would need.
The first half proved to be statistically even between the battle of the tournament's top two seeds, with Muhlenberg getting its break in the 39th minute.
The Bullets brought intensity and the urgency to score in the second half, ultimately outshooting the Mules, 9-4.
Freshman Katie Myers (Randallstown, MD/WSTES) tested Kayla Boisvert just minutes into the second half, making the Muhlenberg goalie dive to stop her shot at the 47:06 mark.
Jenny Line (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) and Igusky rattled off a slew of shots from three corner kicks taken in a matter of two minutes, but were unable to find the twine with just 16 minutes to play.
The Mules' defense held up, recording its ninth shutout of the season and not budging to the relentless Bullet pressure.
Freshman Kat Poster (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) had her shot saved by Boisvert in the visitors' final attempt with 5:38 remaining in the game.
Gettysburg, making its second consecutive championship appearance, finishes the season 12-5-2.
