GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Quinn McCullough
scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the decisive first
half to lead Messiah over Gettysburg 72-54 in non-conference
men’s basketball action on Monday.
McCullough converted a 4-point play with
7:08 left until halftime to start a 25-5 run that gave the
Falcons (2-2) a 45-20 lead at the break. David Henninger
added 10 of his 12 points in the game’s opening 20 minutes,
helping Messiah post its second consecutive victory over the
Bullets (3-1) for the first time since the 1980-81 season.
Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway
Regional) was the lone Gettysburg player to score
in double digits on the evening, finishing with 15 points.
The Bullets shot just 35 percent from the floor while dropping
their first game of the 2003-04 campaign.
Keyed by 54-percent shooting from the
field and a 6-for-11 showing from 3-point range, the Falcons
put the game out of reach by halftime.
Messiah never trailed after Henninger
drilled a 3-pointer to make it 5-4 with 4:12 gone in the first
half. The Falcons built the lead to 20-9 before Reggie
Davis (Longwood, FL/William Penn Charter [PA]) converted
four straight free throws and Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn
Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added two more charity
tosses to pull Gettysburg within 20-15 at the 7:34 mark.
The rest of the half belonged to the
visitors.
On Messiah’s next possession, McCullough
was fouled while draining a 3-pointer and converted the ensuing
free throw for a 24-15 lead, touching off a 25-5 run to the
intermission.
McCullough hit another three before Henninger
converted a layup and Joshua Hutchinson made
two free throws to make it 33-17 with 5:00 to play in the
half.
David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern
Prep) temporarily halted the run with his only 3-pointer
of the night, but the trey would be the Bullets’ final points
of the first half.
A 3-point play by Henninger pushed the
lead to 20 for the first time at 40-20 with 2:31 remaining.
McCullough converted two free throws and Dave Carter
closed out the half with the Falcons’ sixth trey to make it
45-20.
Messiah led by as many as 31 points in
the second half and wasn’t challenged down the stretch. A
jumper by Chris Pombar (Glen Head, NY/North Shore)
cut the lead to 64-49 with 2:12 left and John Pelin’s
(Brockport, NY/Brockport) 3-pointer at the buzzer
set the final margin.
Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie
[NJ]) chipped in with seven points and a team-high
five rebounds for Gettysburg. Pombar’s seven points off the
bench set a personal best.
Henninger and Carter each pulled down
a team-high six rebounds on the night. Henninger added a team-high
four blocked shots while Carter dished out a team-best four
assists.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday
at home against McDaniel. Game time is 2 p.m.
