Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. - Julie Miller led three players in double figures with 17 points as 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins used strong offensive rebounding to defeat Gettysburg 65-59 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Amanda Leese added 13 points and pulled down nine of the Blue Jays' 28 offensive rebounds on the night, finishing with 14 boards. Maureen Myers chipped in with 15 points to help Johns Hopkins (6-0, 2-0 CC) post its 15th consecutive win over the Bullets (1-4, 0-2 CC) in Baltimore.

The victory overshadowed a milestone evening for Gettysburg senior Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic), who became the seventh player in program history to score 1,000 career points. Bear finished with 25 points thanks to a career-high seven 3-pointers and also pulled down a season-high seven rebounds.

Despite shooting only 30 percent for the game, the Blue Jays took advantage of 30 Bullet turnovers to deliver head coach Nancy Funk's 300th victory at Johns Hopkins.

Myers put the Blue Jays ahead to stay at 33-32 with a one-handed runner just 2:34 into the second half, starting a 9-2 burst that made it 40-34 with 14:23 to play.

Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) pulled the visitors within 41-38 with the last of her 11 points, but fouled out seconds later. Keyed by five points from Myers and three from Ashanna Randall, JHU put together a 10-0 run to push the lead to 51-38 with 8:55 left.

A Miller put-back made it 60-48 with 2:51 to play, but Bear swished her final two 3-pointers to fuel an 11-3 burst that pulled Gettysburg within 63-59 in the final minute. The Bullets, however, came up empty on their next possession and Leese hit an uncontested layup to seal the win.

After trailing by as many as 11 points midway through the first half, Johns Hopkins clamped down on defense and rallied to take a three-point lead into halftime.

Down 23-12, the Blue Jays came out of a full timeout with 3-pointers from Alissa Burkholder and Miller, and consecutive transition baskets by Ashley Felix in a span of 1 minute, 33 seconds to cut the lead to 23-22. Bear's fourth 3-pointer of the half temporarily halted the run, but Randall and Myers converted 3 of 4 free throws, and Leese hit a turnaround jumper to give JHU its first lead since the opening minutes at 27-26.

Felix scored on a breakaway layup and Tamera Means converted both ends of a 1-and-1 to cap the 19-3 run and make it 31-26. Reilly scored the last two of her nine first-half points with 1:03 left in the half to snap the Bullets' 7-minute, 8-second scoring drought.

With Bear blowing past the 1,000-career point mark, the game's first 10 minutes belonged to Gettysburg.

Reilly snapped a 6-all tie with a 15-foot jumper and Bear followed with a 3-pointer from the left side for a 11-6 lead, leaving her five points shy of 1,000.

The senior captain stuck a jumper to make it 17-11, then got her milestone points on a deep 3-pointer with 10:50 left in the half for a 20-12 advantage. On the Bullets' next possession, Bear drained another three to stretch the visitors' lead to 23-12 and force the Blue Jays to call their second timeout.

Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's [DE]) contributed eight points and a team-high nine rebounds off the Gettysburg bench. Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) tied a career high with eight assists.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against McDaniel. Game time is 4 p.m.
