Hodge leads Gettysburg past Swarthmore in CC action 61-58

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) tallied 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Gettysburg past Swarthmore 61-58 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Hodge went 9-for-14 shooting from floor and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line to move into ninth place on the program's career all-time field-goal list with 342. It was also her eighth double-double of the season.

Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country) added 10 points, going perfect from the field (4-for-4) and the charity stripe (2-for-2). Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) recorded a career-high seven assists along with four rebounds in the winning effort.

Katie Robinson, the 2002 CC Player of the Year, scored 23 of her 24 points in the second half and added 12 rebounds while Zoey Adams-Deutsch chipped in 14 points in the loss.

The two teams battled back-and forth before the Bullets (14-5, 6-3 CC) took the lead early in the second half and held on for their fourth straight victory.

After Gettysburg grabbed a 55-43 lead with 5:18 remaining in the game, the Garnet (13-5, 6-2 CC) scored 15 of the final 21 points to cut the lead to 61-58 with nine second left. Kristen Lee's 3-point attempt at the buzzer clanked off the rim and the Bullets escaped with the victory.

Gettysburg and Swarthmore came out of the locker room tied at 21 before the Bullets grabbed the lead after two ties and eight lead changes in the first 5:16 of the second half.

With Gettysburg ahead 24-23 at the 18:27 mark, the Garnet rolled off four straight points to take a three-point advantage with 17:20 remaining. Jerusha Rodgers tied the game at 24 with a free throw before Robinson scored off the glass and converted the front end of two free throws for a 27-24 lead.

Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's School) and Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown Visitation) hit back-to-back buckets to give the Bullets a 28-27 advantage.

Rodgers and Robinson each scored in between a Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) jumper to reclaim the lead, 31-30. Eiden then gave Gettysburg the lead to stay with a layup at 14:44.

Hodge, Marshall and Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) combined to score 17 of the Bullets next 21 points to help take a double-digit lead at 53-41 with 5:52 on the clock.

Fueled by 13 points from Robinson, Swarthmore made a furious comeback attempt, cutting the advantage to 61-58 with nine ticks left.

In the first half, the Garnet jumped out of the gate with a 10-2 lead in a span of 4 minutes, 25 seconds. After Alison Furman and Hodge traded baskets, Swarthmore scored eight unanswered points. Robinson started the run converting 1 of 2 free throws before Adams-Deutsch knocked down a jumper. Alison Wolff drained a trey and Adam-Deutsch ended the run ended the run with a jumper.

Keyed by six points from Bengel, Gettysburg went on a 14-2 surge to take a 16-12 lead with 6:57 until intermission before the two squads battled back-and-forth the rest of the half.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday when they host Johns Hopkins. Game time is 7 p.m.
