Abernathy leads Franklin & Marshall past Gettysburg, 77-73

LANCASTER, Pa. - Amy Abernathy scored 17 points - including her 1,000th career point - to lead Franklin & Marshall past Gettysburg 77-73 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Courtney Tierney added 10 points while Lauren Dodrill chipped in nine points in the winning effort.

Freshman Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country) tallied 19 points for the second-straight contest after scoring 19 in a 72-67 loss to Mount Aloysius on Saturday. Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) added 18 points in the loss.

The Diplomats (11-9, 5-6 CC) jumped out to as large as a 14-point lead before the Bullets (14-8, 6-5 CC) made a furious comeback attempt, but Franklin & Marshall held on for its second-straight victory against Gettysburg at Mayser Center.

The Bullets, who overcame a 14-point deficit to defeat the Diplomats 76-70 at Gettysburg on Jan. 18, came within two points of tying the game, but could get no closer. The Bullets had the ball with 29 seconds let before Abernathy tied up Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) and Franklin & Marshall had the possession arrow to regain control.

In the first half, the Diplomats jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first half fueled by DeFazio with six points.

After Fran DeFazio and Bengel traded baskets to open the contest, Franklin & Marshall rolled off the next seven points to take a 13-4 lead with 15:40 remaining.

Abernathy started the run with a layup at he 16:45 mark before Ritcher drained two free throws. Dana Johns ended the run with a 3-pointer with 15:40 until intermission.

Bengel stopped the surge with her second bucket of the game before DeFazio knocked down back-to-back jumpers with 13:47 on the clock.

With the score 21-14 in the Diplomats favor, Tierney helped extend the lead to double-digits, scoring 10 of the Diplomats final 19 points to give Franklin & Marshall a 39-29 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Bengel and Bear combined for 19 of Gettysburg's 44 points to lead the furious charge back.

After Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's School) brought the Bullets within three at 57-54 at the 8:36 mark, the Diplomats scored seven unanswered to regain a double-digit advantage.

Jamie Drahos and Abernathy both hit jumpers sandwiched between a Johns trey for a 64-54 lead with 7:20 remaining.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday when they host McDaniel. Tip-off is 12 p.m.
