Oloruntoba’s last-second tip-in lifts Gettysburg over McDaniel, 68-66

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) tipped in a missed 3-pointer with 3.7 seconds remaining to lift Gettysburg over McDaniel 68-66 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday.

The Green Terror (5-18, 2-9 CC) had one final chance to finish the upset, but Erik Larson’s desperation 3-pointer missed the mark as time expired.

Oloruntoba’s game-winning basket capped the Bullets’ rally from an 11-point second-half deficit, helping Gettysburg (12-11, 8-3 CC) maintain its one-game lead over Johns Hopkins for the final playoff spot in the CC West Division.

David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) led the Bullets with 15 points and also matched a career high with six assists. Ryan Page (Silver Spring, MD/St. John’s College [DC]) added 12 points and seven rebounds while Doug Loveland (Oceanport, NJ/Christian Brothers Acad.) equaled a career high with 10 points in the win.

The loss overshadowed outstanding performances from three McDaniel seniors playing in their final home games. Notorious Bullet-killer Greg Hill struck for a game-high 20 points, including the game-tying 3-pointer with 14.9 seconds left. Larson knocked down his first three 3-pointers of the season en route to 11 points while Adam Hynes added 10.

Trailing by 11 point with 14:38 remaining, Gettysburg scrapped back to keep its postseason aspirations alive.

After a Hill trey made it 50-39 Green Terror, Reggie Davis (Longwood, FL/Wm. Penn Charter [PA]) answered with a three of his own and Oloruntoba converted a 3-point play to start the comeback.

Hill knocked down a driving jumper to push the lead to 52-45, but Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) knocked down a long-distance 3-pointer and Page scored the next four points to knot the game at 52 with 8:26 left.

McDaniel regained a five-point lead on a jumper from Alan Hoyt and another triple from Hill, but Glaser drained a three and Loveland scored four points on two free throws and a layup to give the Bullets a 59-57 lead with 4:07 left.

Two charity tosses from Glaser and one from Oloruntoba made it 64-61 with 50 seconds remaining. Hill hit a pull-up jumper to pull the Green Terror within 1, then followed two free throws by Justin Harrison (Washington, DC/St. John’s College) with his fourth and final 3-pointer of the game to tie the contest at 66 and set the stage for Oloruntoba’s heroics.

After spotting Gettysburg a quick 11-3 lead, McDaniel drained seven straight 3-pointers throughout the rest of the half to lead by as many as 12, before taking a 37-31 edge into the locker room. Larson, who had missed his only two 3-point attempts of the season heading into the game, drilled three from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes to help the Green Terror build its double-digit lead.

The win was the Bullets’ seventh straight over McDaniel, dating back to the 1999-2000 season. Hill, whose program-record 8-for-8 3-point shooting performance and 27 points keyed the Green Terror’s last win in the series, finished Saturday’s contest 7-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-9 from behind the arc.

Glaser’s six assists tied a career high set against Cal St. Hayward last season. Harrison, making his first collegiate start, finished with eight points and hauled in a career-high six rebounds.

Mike DiPiero dished out a game-high eight assists for McDaniel.

Gettysburg returns to action at Ursinus on Wednesday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
