COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Krista Marino
led four Ursinus players in double digits with 16 points,
helping the Bears defeat Gettysburg 77-71 in Centennial Conference
(CC) women's basketball action on Thursday.
Marino went 4-for-7 from the floor, 3-for-5
from behind the arc and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Julia Tramontana and Bridget Hussey
each added 17 points for the Bears (8-16, 5-9 CC) while Alison
Walker recorded 11 points in the winning effort.
Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park
Country) led the Bullets (15-9, 7-6 CC) with a career-high
24 points along with 11 rebounds. Dana Bear (Lansdale,
PA/Lansdale Catholic) chipped in 10 points in the
loss.
Ursinus jumped out to an early lead and never
looked back for their first victory against Gettysburg since
the 1996-97 season.
The Bears used a 9-0 run to open up a 22-11
lead with 10:04 left in the first half.
Kristen Torkelson started the
surge with a jumper at the 12:27 mark to give Ursinus a 15-11
lead. Tramontana and Walker both scored in the paint before
Marino ended the run with a 3-pointer for a 22-11 lead.
Ursinus maintained its double-digit advantage
until the Bullets scored 11 of the final 17 points in the
half.
With the score 26-15 in favor of the Bears,
Bengel cut the lead to 26-17 with a jumper with 6:03 left
until intermission. Katie Eiden (Silver Spring, MD/Georgetown
Visitation) converted a layup before Tramontana knocked
down a jumper to increase the margin to 28-19 with 3:30 on
the clock.
After Bengel hit 1 of 2 free throws, Erin
Hussey drained a trey to restore the double-digit
lead at 31-20.
Gettysburg went on to score six unanswered
points to cut the deficit to 31-26 with 20 seconds remaining
in the half. Bengel, Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity
B.V.M) and Jay Hodge (Silver Spring, MD/St.
Vincent Palotti) each hit baskets in the run before
Erin Hussey knocked down a 3-pointer with three seconds left
to go into the locker room with a 34-26 lead.
In the second half, Ursinus increased the
advantage to 16 points at 47-31. Fueled
by 13 second-half points from Bengel, the Bullets cut the
deficit to 68-64. Bridget Hussey ended the comeback attempt
with a 3-pointer and also converted the free throw for the
four-point play and a 70-64 lead with 1:38 left in the game.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday
in the regular-season finale at home against Dickinson. Game
time is 4 p.m.
