Blue Jays use big first half to subdue Gettysburg in CC tie-breaker, 82-78

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. - Steve Adams scored a team-high 18 points and Eric Toback went 5-for-6 from 3-point range en route to a career-high 16 points as Johns Hopkins defeated Gettysburg 82-78 in a Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball divisional tie-breaker on Monday.

The Blue Jays (19-6), who shot 72 percent from the floor to build a 50-37 halftime lead they wouldn't relinquish, advanced to face Ursinus in the CC semifinals on Wednesday in Collegeville. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) wrapped up his superlative sophomore season by scoring a game-high 26 points for the Bullets (13-13), who saw their two-year CC championship run come to an end despite a furious late-game rally. Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) added a career-high 16 points in the loss while fellow freshman Ryan Page (Silver Spring, MD/St. John's College [DC]) matched a career-high with 15.

Behind a combined 10-for-10 shooting performance and 25 points from Adams and Toback, Johns Hopkins shot 72 percent form the floor in the first half to build a 13-point lead at the break.

With the game tied at 28 and Adams on the bench with two fouls, Brendan Kamm converted 1 of 2 free throws and Jay Kreider knocked down a pull-up jumper in transition to touch off a 14-3 run over the next 4 minutes, 27 seconds.

Page's 3-point play snapped Gettysburg's 5-minute, 35-second stretch without a field goal and pulled the Bullets within 37-31 at the 3:28 mark. Kevin Marquez, however, answered with a trey and Kreider scored from the wing to cap the run and make it 42-31.

Two free throws apiece from Glaser and Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) briefly kept the Bullets within single digits, but Toback drilled his third 3-pointer of the half and Kamm hit a jumper as time expired to give the Blue Jays a 50-37 lead heading into the locker room.

Thanks to a combined 24 second-half points from Glaser and Brady, Gettysburg turned the tables throughout the second half, but couldn't overtake the hosts.

A driving Brady layup cut the lead to 65-61 with 6:30 left, but Kreider cashed in two free throws following a Bullet technical and Toback knocked down a 3-pointer on the following possession to make it 70-61.

Mike Blaine appeared to seal the game with consecutive layups that pushed the lead to 76-65 at the 2:39 mark, but Gettysburg fought back again.

Brady drilled a 3-pointer on the Bullets' next trip and Page poured in two more treys in a 30-second span to cut the lead to 78-76 with 41.6 seconds remaining.

Kreider, however, calmly drained two free throws to make it 80-76 and Gettysburg committed a crucial turnover on its next trip.

Glaser's layup with 14.7 seconds left cut the lead to 81-78, but Kreider converted the first of two charity tosses to seal the win.

With the victory, the Blue Jays improved to 11-0 at home in 2002-03 and advanced to the CC semifinals for the first time since 2000.

In addition to his 26-point outing, Glaser pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Page set a career high with five assists in the loss.
