Johns Hopkins defeats Gettysburg 71-57 in CC action

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Kathy Darling tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg 71-57 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Darling, who surpassed the 1,500-point plateau in the contest, was 9-for-12 from the floor and 1-for-2 from the free-throw line.

Ashley Shepler added 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 from behind the arc. She also dished out seven assists to move into third place on the program career assists list with 343. Ashley Felix chipped in 10 points and five rebounds in the winning effort.

Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's School) led the Bullets (14-6, 6-4 CC) with 16 points and six rebounds. Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country) recorded 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

The Blue Jays (14-5, 8-1 CC) used hot shooting from 3-point land to grab the upperhand and never looked back to increase their lead in the CC East to three games with an 8-1 conference record.

After Bengel scored the first points of the game at the 19:20 mark, Johns Hopkins went on a 16-6 run to jump out to a 16-8 advantage.

Shepler got the Blue Jays on the board with a trey 59 seconds into the game before knocking down another from behind the arc at the 18:16 mark.

After Bengel cut the deficit to 9-4 on a jumper with 16:52 remaining in the first half, Felix drained a 3-pointer.

Ashanna Randall and Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M) traded baskets and Shepler and Bengel traded buckets with 13:01 left, but Shepler then hit her third 3-pointer of the half at 12:52 for a 16-8 lead.

Darling, Felix and Maureen Myers combined for 20 of Johns Hopkins' final 24 first-half points to go into the locker room with a 40-21 lead.

Johns Hopkins continued its hot shooting the second half, going 14-for-29 from the field to take as large as a 23-point advantage 4:05 into the final frame.

Keyed by four points from Ross, Gettysburg went on a modest 8-0 run to cut the lead to 69-57 with 1:25 left in the contest, but could get no closer.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Mt. Aloysius in non-conference action. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
