Johns Hopkins uses defensive first half to stop Gettysburg, 60-36

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. - Steve Adams scored a game-high 11 points as Johns Hopkins held Gettysburg to six first-half points en route to a 60-36 victory in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Wednesday.

Jay Kreider, Brendan Kamm and Frank Mason chipped in with nine points apiece for the Blue Jays (14-5, 5-3 CC), who pulled within one game of first place in the CC West Division. Adams and Mike Blaine each hauled in a team-high six rebounds.

The Bullets (10-10, 6-2 CC) struggled from the field throughout the night, converting only 3 of 26 3-pointers, including an 0-for-14 showing behind the arc in the decisive first half. Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) and Graham Shaffer-Rais (Portsmouth, NH/Portsmouth) led the visitors with five points apiece.

Gettysburg went scoreless for the game's opening 8 minutes, 31 seconds and never got the offense in gear throughout the first half, missing 18 of 21 shots and turning the ball over 10 times in the opening 20 minutes.

JHU also struggled to score throughout the half, but found enough offense to take a commanding lead into the break.

Blaine scored on a put-back on Johns Hopkins' first possession of the night and Adams converted in the lane after a dry spell of nearly four minutes to make it 4-0. Both teams went scoreless over the next 2 minutes, 28 seconds before Kamm converted 1 of 2 free throws for a 5-0 lead.

Brady finally put the Bullets on the board with a pull-up jumper at the 11:29 mark, but Kreider scored on a breakaway layup and Blaine put back his own miss for a 9-2 lead with 7:34 left in the half.

Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) scored in traffic to cut the deficit to five, but Mark Leone drilled a 3-pointer on the Blue Jays' next possession, touching off a 10-2 run that made it 22-6 at halftime.

Erik Fromm's (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) scored Gettysburg's only other field goal, converting a jumper in the lane with 2:14 left.

A bucket from Kamm with 13:37 remaining pushed the lead to 32-12. Blaine scored in transition to make it 39-18 with 10:34 left and Johns Hopkins never led by fewer than 20 points the rest of the way, snapping a two-game home losing streak against the Bullets.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at Haverford. Game time is 1 p.m.
