COCOA, Fla. - Sophomore Kevin Caviston (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central) went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs to help the Gettysburg baseball team win its first game of the season 5-3 over Bridgewater State at the Cocoa Expo in Florida. The Bullets then fell to LaRoche 6-3 in the nightcap.
Caviston, who led the Bullets (1-1-1) in a 7-7 decision against LaRoche on Sunday with four hits, knocked in the eventual game-winning run against the Bears (2-3) on a three-run double in the fifth inning.
Nate Bashaw (Weybridge, England/Tasis) added a 2-for-3 performance against Bridgewater State along with two runs scored.
Jason Arraiol led the Bears, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the losing effort.
After Bridgewater State took a 1-0 lead on a Chad Combra RBI triple in the first inning, Gettysburg scored five unanswered runs to take a commanding 5-1 advantage.
Bashaw started the third inning with a single and Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) reached on an error before Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) knotted the game at 1 with an RBI groundout to second. Freshman Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) put the Bullets ahead to stay with his first collegiate hit.
In the fifth inning, Gettysburg loaded the bases on consecutive walks to Bashaw, Luteran and Mullen. Caviston hit a double to score all three runners and increase the lead to 5-1.
The Bears scored single runs in the sixth and seventh, but could get no closer.
Junior Dan Armstrong (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) (1-0) pitched six innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Ron Letteri (Hempstead, NY/South Side) pitched the seventh for his first collegiate save.
In the nightcap, the Bullets continued the success of the first game, scoring three runs in the first inning before LaRoche scored the final six runs for a 6-3 victory.
Jack Schanbacher led the Redhawks, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the winning effort.
Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs in the loss for Gettysburg.
Trailing 3-1 going into the fourth inning, the LaRoche scored four runs to take a lead they would not relinquish. After Rob Quigley walked and Matthew Czarnecki singled, Schanbacher plated both runners with a single to tie the game at 3. Brad Ravenstahl knocked home Schanbacher with a double and then scored on a Ryan Unger single to take a 5-3 advantage.
The Bullets opened the scoring in the contest with three runs in the opening frame. Whitman and Bashaw started the rally with walks. Whitman came around to score on an error. Mullen singled before Ball scored Luteran and Mullen on an RBI double.
After allowing the three runs in the first inning, LaRoche starter Justin Slavick settled down to retired 20 of the final 21 batters faced in the game, including nine strikeouts.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday against Simpson at 10 a.m. in Florida.
