Farrell scores game-winner in Bullets’ 10-9 win over Mary Washington

Box Score

DISNEY, Fla. – Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) scored with 1:12 remaining to break a 9-all tie and lift eighth-ranked Gettysburg over No. 7 Mary Washington 10-9 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Monday.

Farrell finished with three goals for her second consecutive hat trick, helping the Bullets (2-0) defeat the Eagles (0-1) for the third consecutive season. Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) scored five goals and added two assists, giving her eight goals and 15 points in her first two games this year.

Kate Clute scored two goals and dished out three assists for Mary Washington, an NCAA Final Four squad each of the past two years, while Britt Gottlieb added two goals and two assists in the losing effort.

The Eagles stormed to a 3-0 advantage in the first 11 minutes, 32 seconds of the first half before Murphy scored her first two goals of the game to pull Gettysburg within 3-2.

With the Bullets trailing 4-2, Murphy found the net a third time, then set up Farrell’s first goal to knot the game at 4. Murphy struck again to make it 5-4 and Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) followed with her second goal of the year to give Gettysburg a two-goal lead.

The Bullets didn’t trail the rest of the way, but a pair of Mary Washington goals knotted the game at 9 down the stretch. With the teams heading for their second overtime game in the last three years, Murphy set up Farrell on the game-winner with 72 ticks left in regulation.

With her five-goal outburst, Murphy moved into eighth place on the program’s all-time goal-scoring list (98). Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) scored her first goal of the season for Gettysburg while Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) finished with seven saves.

Jessica Goon and Emily Nagel also scored twice for the Eagles while Robyn Lankford made 10 saves.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday with games against Drew at 11 a.m. and Denison at 5 p.m.
