Box Score
DISNEY, Fla. – Megan Murphy (Wilton,
CT/Wilton) scored four goals and Ashley Froman
(Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) dished out a career-high
four assists to lead seventh-ranked Gettysburg over Denison
14-4 in non-conference women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Murphy, who tallied a career-high 10
points in a 15-7 win over Drew earlier in the day, also picked
up her team-leading 14th assist on the night, giving her 30
points in her first four games this season. The senior captain
is already nearly half way to breaking her own program record
for assists in a season (31 in 2002).
Froman, a defense-first midfielder who had
five assists in her first 62 collegiate games, nearly matched
that total against the Big Red (2-1) to help the Bullets (4-0)
open the season with four straight wins for the first time
since 1986.
Leslie Masterpaul scored
twice for Denison while goalie Abigail Stewart
made 15 saves.
Behind two goals from Murphy and Julika
Blakenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County), Gettysburg
built a 6-2 lead and never looked back.
Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin)
opened the scoring just 26 seconds into the contest, finding
the net off an assist from Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills,
NY/Half Hollow Hills East). Nineteen seconds later,
Murphy scored the first of her four goals to make it 2-0.
Denison’s Courtney Abrams
cut the deficit in half with an unassisted goal at 3:17, but
Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country
School) set up Murphy minutes later, then scored one
of her own on Froman’s first helper to push the lead to 4-1
with just 7:59 elapsed.
Masterpaul scored unassisted to pull
the Big Red within 4-2, but Blankenship found the net twice
in a span of 1 minute, 9 seconds to give the Bullets a four-goal
lead.
Stephanie Pratzner cut
the Gettysburg lead to 7-4 with 23:58 remaining, but Denison
wouldn’t score the rest of the way. Cassidy Zappacosta
(Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) netted the first of her
career-high two goals minutes after Pratzner’s tally to touch
off a 7-0 Bullet run to the end of the game.
Ellie Shihadeh (Malvern, PA/Conestoga)
also collected a career-best two goals for Gettysburg.
The Bullets wrap up their spring break
schedule on Friday against Connecticut College in Florida.
Game time is 10 a.m.
