Box Score
GRANTHAM, Pa. – Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin,
NY/Baldwin) scored with 3.3 seconds remaining to lift
fourth-ranked Gettysburg over No. 9 SUNY Cortland 8-7 in non-conference
men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
With the clock winding down in regulation,
Van Nostrand took a feed from Nick Purkat (Annandale,
VA/W.T. Woodson) and fired the game-winning shot past
goalie Steve Feltmann to seal the Bullets’ fourth
straight victory over the Red Dragons (2-1). Van Nostrand,
who finished with a game-high four goals, also scored with
3:17 remaining to knot the game at 7.
Andrew Roth and Craig
Degnan netted hat tricks for Cortland. Feltmann finished
with 15 saves while facing 45 of Gettysburg’s 46 shots on
the afternoon.
Despite holding 46-25 shot advantage,
the Bullets trailed for all but 14 seconds in the second half
until Van Nostrand found the net twice in the final minutes.
With his team down 7-6, the All-America attackman
corralled a loose ball and scored to tie the game with 3:17
remaining.
Gettysburg freshman Chris Renzi
(Fairport, NY/Fairport) won the ensuing face-off and
Cortland was called for a 30-second penalty with 2:17 remaining,
but the Bullets failed to capitalize on the extra-man opportunity.
Each team turned the ball over twice down the stretch before
John O'Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland) picked
up a loose ball with 20 seconds left to set up Gettysburg’s
game-winning possession.
Degnan scored the game’s opening goal
just 2:13 into the contest to give the Red Dragons a quick
lead, but Gettysburg answered with four straight markers,
the last two from Van Nostrand, to take a 4-1 advantage with
10:35 left in the first half.
Twenty-three seconds after Van Nostrand scored,
Roth netted an unassisted goal to touch off a 5-1 Cortland
run to the end of the half that made it 6-5 in favor of the
Red Dragons at the break. Roth added a man-up goal with 8:09
left in the quarter and finished his hat trick off a Derek
Elvin assist at the 3:24 mark to give Cortland its
first lead since the game’s early minutes.
Gettysburg outshot the Red Dragons 10-0 in
the third quarter, but eight saves by Feltmann preserved Cortland’s
one-goal lead.
Tripp Neville (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)
finally pulled the Bullets even at 6 with 11:28 remaining,
but a clean face-off win by Andrew Pultz led
directly to Drew Hyatt’s unassisted goal just
14 seconds later, restoring the visitors’ slim advantage.
Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola
Blakefield) finished with 10 saves for Gettysburg.
O'Bannon, Kevin Smith (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh)
and Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown)
all scored goals in the win while Peter Politi (Wilton,
CT/Wilton) added one assist.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday
at Swarthmore. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
