HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) scored the eventual game-winning run in the eighth inning to lead Gettysburg past Juniata 7-6 in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.
Whitman went 1-for-3 and scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to give the Bullets (5-4-1) their second one-run victory this season.
Chris Ferris (Scituate, MA/Boston College) added a 2-for-3 performance with one run scored while Tom Gallione (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) (2-0) pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits in the winning effort.
Adam Camberg led the Eagles (6-7), going 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs in the loss.
The two teams battled back-and-forth for seven innings before Gettysburg put four runs on the board in the eighth and never looked back for its fifth victory of the year.
After Juniata grabbed a 4-3 advantage in the bottom of the sixth, the Bullets erupted for four runs on three hits to take a 7-3 lead.
Justin Steele (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) reached on an error before Ferris and Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) singled to load the bases to start the eighth. Steele tied the contest on a wild pitch. After Whitman walked to reload the bases, Ron Lettieri (Hempstead, NY/South Side) gave Gettysburg the lead for good on an RBI groundout to the pitcher. Nathan Bashaw (Weybridge, England/Tasis England) plated Ferris with a single before Whitman touched home on a wild pitch to end the surge.
The Eagles scored a single runs in the eighth and ninth, but Kodi Hockenberry was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a Camberg single to center field for the final out of the game.
Bashaw started the scoring in the contest in the first, touching home on an error to give the Bullets an early 1-0 advantage.
Jesse Leonard tied the score at 1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
Gettysburg retook the lead with two runs in the third. Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) brought one run home with a groundout to short before Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) scored on an error for a 3-1 advantage.
Juniata knotted the game at 3 with two runs in the fourth and added a run in the seventh to take its only lead on the afternoon at 4-3.
Lettieri pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits to pick up his second save of the year.
The Bullets return to action on Thursday at York (Pa.). Game time is 3 p.m.
