Stewart nets four goals to lift No. 5 Gettysburg past Muhlenberg, 16-3

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) netted four goals and added an assist to lead fifth-ranked Gettysburg past Muhlenberg 16-3 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday.

Stewart, who leads the squad with 14 goals, recorded all four of his goals in the first half to lift the Bullets (5-1, 2-0 CC) to their 36th straight conference victory.

Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) found the twine three times and added two assists while Alec Knight (Wilton, CT/Wilton) notched his first collegiate hat trick in the winning effort.

John Westendorf led the Mules (4-1, 0-1 CC) with two goals and Joe LaBella made 11 saves in the loss.

Fueled by three goals from Stewart, Gettysburg jumped out to a 6-0 lead in of the game and never looked back on the way to the squad's third straight win.

Stewart opened the scoring with an unassisted goal with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. Nick Purkat (Annadale, VA/W.T. Woodson) netted a goal off a Tripp Neville (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) assist at the 4:14 mark.

Van Nostrand found the twine 39 seconds later to increase the advantage to 3-0. Stewart scored unassisted before Purkat found John O'Bannon (Marshall, VA/Highland) with seven seconds left in the first quarter.

After Stewart gave the Bullets a 6-0 lead with his third marker of day at 10:09 in the second, Westendorf put Muhlenberg on the scoreboard with a goal 38 seconds later.

Gettysburg then scored unassisted goals from Stewart and Neville at the end of the half to go into the intermission with an 8-1 advantage.

Van Nostrand found the twine off a Stewart assist to open the second-half scoring at the 11:22 mark.

After Westendorf cut the deficit with a goal at 8:58 in the third quarter, the Bullets erupted for six goals to open up a 15-2 advantage and cruise to victory.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against No. 1 Middlebury in a rematch of last year's Division III national championship game.
