FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Jon Hurd went a combined 4-for-7 with three RBIs to help Mary Washington sweep the doubleheader against Gettysburg 7-3 and 6-1 in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.
Hurd went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI in the first game before going 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the nightcap.
Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) went 3-for-7 with one RBI in the losing effort.
The Eagles (7-4) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after four innings and never looked back to take the first game, 7-3.
Jay Quintana and Drew Robertson recorded two hits and two RBIs apiece in the victory. Chris Ferris (Scituate, MA/Boston College) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Gettysburg.
Mary Washington scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 advantage. Quintana, Robertson and Sean Townsend hit three consecutive RBI singles to plate the three runs.
The Eagles extended their lead to 7-0 with four runs in the fourth. After Matt Lemire led off the inning with a double, he came around to score on John Chiles RBI single. Hurd brought Chiles in with a double before Quintana and Robertson plated two more runs with back-to-back singles.
Ferris finally got the Bullets on the board in the seventh with an RBI single to score Ron Lettieri (Hempstead, NY/South Side). Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Mullen hit consecutive singles to score two runners, but Gettysburg could get no closer.
In the nightcap, the Bullets jumped out to an early advantage before Mary Washington scored the final six runs of the game to sweep the doubleheader, 6-1.
Chiles led the Eagles, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Brendan Orsinger (2-2) went the distance, allowing one run on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Justin Steele (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) recorded a two-hit performance for Gettysburg in the loss.
After Gettysburg took a 1-0 lead, Mary Washington plated two runs in the third on its way to the 6-1 victory. Lemire reached on an error and Chiles singled to open the third. Both runners came around to score on Hurd's two-run double.
The Eagles added two runs in the fourth on a double off the bat of Chiles to score two runs. Mary Washington posted single runs in the fifth and sixth to seal the win.
The Bullets scored a run in the first to take their only lead in the two contests. Lettieri started the game with a single and came around to score on Luteran's RBI double.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday for its Centennial Conference home opener against Johns Hopkins.
