Box Score
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Julika Blankenship
(Crumpton, MD/Kent County) and Megan Murphy
(Wilton, CT/Wilton) combined for 12 goals and six
assists to lead seventh-ranked Gettysburg over No. 16 Ursinus
17-6 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action
on Saturday.
Blankenship and Murphy each tallied six
goals and three assists on the day to help the Bullets (6-0,
1-0 CC) improve to 6-0 for the second time in program history
and first time in 22 years. The duo has scored 52 percent
of Gettysburg’s goals (44) this season and collected 56 percent
of the team’s points (75).
Blankenship, who set single-game career
highs for goals and points on Saturday, found the net five
times in the decisive first half, including a run of four
straight goals in the game’s first 19 minutes. Murphy’s six-goal
outing matched a career high set against Mary Washington in
2002.
Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville)
added two goals for the Bullets, who outshot the Bears 36-14
on the afternoon while posting their biggest margin of victory
in the series’ history.
Emily Durkin scored twice
for Ursinus (1-2, 0-1 CC) while Melissa Scholl
made 15 saves.
Despite the final score, the game’s opening
minutes were reminiscent of recent battles between the two
winners of the CC’s last four championships.
Erikah Weir gave the Bears
their only lead of the contest at the 1:12 mark, before Murphy
answered with a free-position goal at 3:24. Blankenship scored
unassisted to make it 2-1, but Julie Gentile
finished a solo run exactly five minutes into the game to
tie the score at 2.
Minutes later, Blankenship converted
the first of her three free-position goals, touching off a
5-0 run over the next 16 minutes, 59 seconds. After a 10-minute
scoreless stretch on both sides, Blankenship scored on another
free-position shot at 17:19 to make it 4-2.
Murphy set up Blankenship’s fourth goal
of the day at the 19:00 mark, then found the net off a feed
from Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) just
40 seconds later to push the lead to 6-2. Lowe capped the
run with an unassisted marker at 24:34.
Ursinus regained some momentum when Aubrey
Andre scored with 40 seconds left in the half, but
Blankenship cashed in a third free-position chance with just
15 ticks remaining to give Gettysburg an 8-3 lead at the break.
Two more Blankenship-to-Murphy connections,
sandwiched around a goal from Kathy Delauney (Lutherville,
MD/Roland Park Country School), pushed the Bullet
lead to 11-3 with 21:31 left. Goals from Kathryn Grassel
(Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East), Murphy and
Lowe in the last 13 minutes set the series-record final margin.
In addition to its decisive edge in shots,
Gettysburg also held a 43-31 edge in ground balls and took
advantage of 30 Bear turnovers.
With her three assists, Murphy tied former
teammate Becky Bucha for the program’s all-time lead in that
category (73). In addition, Murphy’s nine-point performace
moved her past Amanda Corroon (185 point from 1983-86) and
into fifth-place on the program’s all-time points list (190).
Farrell finished with a goal and an assist
for the Bullets. Gentile and Andre each tallied a goal and
an assist for Ursinus.
Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday
at Susquehanna. Game time is 4 p.m.
