Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Washington sophomore Kyle
Mitten picked the perfect time to score his first
goal of the season, netting the go-ahead tally with 4:54 remaining
to lift 12th-ranked Washington over No. 4 Gettysburg 9-8 in
Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
Jon Spivey scored a game-high
four goals and Chris Edwards added a hat trick
for the Shoremen (5-2, 3-0 CC), who snapped a seven-game losing
streak to the Bullets (6-2, 2-1 CC) and also ended Gettysburg’s
run of 36 consecutive CC victories. Both streaks began after
Washington wins during the 1997 season.
Conference assist leader Jon Berger
scored one goal and handed out a game-high four assists on
the afternoon while goalie Richard Yost made 13 saves to key
the victory.
Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola
Blakefield) and Sean McTernan (Cordlandt Manor,
NY/Hendrick Hudson) each tallied two goals for the
Bullets, who suffered a second regular-season loss for the
first time since 1999. Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown)
and Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Mark’s), who
have combined with Gallant to form an all-freshman attack
unit, paced Gettysburg with three points apiece.
Washington never trailed on the afternoon,
using a strong start and a big finish to even the all-time
series with Gettysburg at 11-11.
Goals from Spivey and Edwards in the
opening 66 seconds gave the Shoremen a quick 2-0 lead before
markers from Berger and Edwards in a 20-second span made it
4-1 with 5:57 left in the first quarter.
Tripp Neville (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)
and Pryor netted unassisted goals to pull the Bullets within
4-3, but Spivey completed his hat trick with a pair of goals
in the final 5:47 of the half to give Washington a 6-4 lead
at the break.
Spivey’s fourth goal of the day gave
the Shoremen a 7-5 lead at the 12:32 mark of the third quarter.
Pryor set up Gallant with 3:37 left in the quarter to cut
the lead to 1 heading into the final 15 minutes.
With 5:08 remaining, Gettysburg pulled
even for the first time since the game’s opening seconds when
Stewart finished a solo run and fired a shot past Yost to
knot the game at 7. Following a face-off win by Tom
Parr, however, Mitten picked up the ground ball, streaked
into the offensive zone and scored the go-ahead goal just
14 seconds after Stewart drew the Bullets even.
Yost stopped McTernan’s attempt to tie
the game with 3:15 remaining and Berger set up Edwards for
a key insurance goal and a 9-7 lead with 1:14 left. Brian
Ford (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) closed the scoring
with his third goal of the season in the final two seconds.
Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola
Blakefield) finished with nine saves for Gettysburg,
which last dropped a CC game on Apr. 12, 1997, an 18-9 loss
to Washington. The Shoremen’s last victory against the Bullets
prior to Saturday was a 10-9 win in the NCAA semifinals on
May 17, 1997 in Chestertown.
Gettysburg returns to action on Friday
at Ursinus. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
