COCOA, Fla. - Sophomore Kevin Caviston (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central) went 4-for-4 with an RBI as the Gettysburg baseball team opened its 2003 campaign with a 7-7 tie against LaRoche College in the Cocoa Expo on Sunday.
Caviston, making his first collegiate start, had four singles and an RBI in the season opener for both teams.
Dash Kellner (Kent, CT/Ridgefield) added two RBIs and Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) recorded one RBI while going 2-for-4 in the game.
Tony Delbianco led the Red Hawks (0-0-1), going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and four RBIs.
The two squads battled back-and-forth throughout the contest until the game was called after seven innings with the score tied at 7.
LaRoche started the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning off an RBI triple from Jack Schanbacher.
The Bullets (0-0-1) answered with two runs in the first inning. Senior captain Nate Bashaw (Weybridge, England/Tasis) started the surge with a double. After Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) grounded out to short, Gettysburg got three consecutive singles from Mullen, Caviston and Kellner to plate Bashaw and Mullen.
The Redhawks then grabbed a 3-2 advantage with two runs in the second after Delbianco scored two runners on a double.
The Bullets answered to knot the game at 3 when Mullen scored on Kellner's fielder's choice.
Each team then erupted for four runs apiece in the fourth inning.

In the top of the inning, sophomores Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) and Joe Gossweiler (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) started the Gettysburg rally with singles before Ron Lettieri (Hempstead, NY/South Side) loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch. After Bashaw walked to score a run, Luteran, Caviston and Kellner each plated a run on RBI singles to knot the score at 7.
The Bullets then battled Ohio Valley for four innings, but the game was rained out with the score tied at 4. Stats against the Fighting Scots do not count because teams must complete five innings for the game to be official.
Gettysburg returns to action on Monday against Bridgewater State (Mass.) at 11 a.m. and LoRoche at 1 p.m.
