Box Score
HAVERFORD, Pa. - Jay Mayes (Pikesville,
MD/McDonogh School) netted the game-winning goal with
1:55 left in overtime to lift seventh-ranked Gettysburg past
Haverford 7-6 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse
action on Saturday.
Mayes, who recorded his first collegiate
point on an assist in last year's meeting with the Fords,
posted his second career goal off a feed from Jake Van
Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin). Mayes last found the
twine against Dickinson in 2002.
Van Nostrand led the Bullets (8-3, 4-1 CC)
with two goals and two assists. Van Nostrand, a second-team
All-American last season, was held to one point in his last
four games before playing an important role in the comeback
victory over Haverford (4-6, 2-5 CC).
Mike Fischette led the Fords
with a goal and three assists while Joe Mauri
added a hat trick in the losing effort.
Haverford had to comeback from a two-goal
deficit to force overtime before Gettysburg scored the sudden-death
goal to end the Fords' upset thoughts.
With the score tied at 4, Van Nostrand gave
the defending CC champions a 6-4 advantage with markers at
11:26 and 7:55 in the fourth. Chase Stewart (Downingtown,
PA/Downingtown) set up Van Nostrand on both occasions.
The Fords, who had lost by an average of
18.8 goals in the previous nine meetings, did not give up
without a fight. Fischette scored off an Eric Seidman
assist with 2:43 left in the game. After the Bullets were
called for slashing, Fischette found Tom Cassidy
to knot the game at 6 with six seconds left.
In the overtime, goalkeepers John Michals
and Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield)
each made a save to keep their teams alive, before Van Nostrand
hooked up with Mayes for the winning marker at the 1:55 mark.
Haverford jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Seidman
found the net off a Cassidy assist with 1:09 left in the first
quarter.
Gettysburg tied the game in the second quarter
after Van Nostrand feed Evan Gallant (Lutherville, MD/Loyola-Blakefield)
at the 4:52 mark. The Fords retook the lead with 17 seconds
left in the quarter on Mauri's goal off a Fischette assist.
The lead only lasted 14 seconds after Nick Purkat (Annadale,
VA/W.T. Woodson) netted a goal off a Kevin Smith
(Baltimore. MD/McDonogh School) assist to go into
the intermission tied at 2.
The Mauri-Fischette connection gave Haverford
a 3-2 advantage 4:30 into the third quarter.
The Bullets answered 13 seconds later with
a Peter Politi (Wilton, CT/Wilton) unassisted
goal before Gettysburg took its first lead of the contest
on a Sean McTernan (Cortland Manor, NY/Henderick Hudson)
unassisted goal at the 6:46 mark in the third, 4-3.
Mauri tied the score at 4 with his third
marker of the afternoon off a Jonathan Kelman feed
with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
McGinnis finished the day with seven saves
while Michals made 11 stops.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday
at home against CC rival Dickinson. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
