Mullen leads Gettysburg to 5-1 victory over Ursinus in opener; Bears take nightcap, 7-0

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) went 2-for-3 to lead Gettysburg past Ursinus 5-1 in Centennial Conference baseball action on Saturday. The Bears won the nightcap, 7-0.

Mullen smacked his first collegiate home run and added a double along with two runs scored and an RBI to help the Bullets (9-9-2, 4-3-1 CC) split the season series with Ursinus (14-8, 5-3 CC).

Joe Bolinski led the Bears, going 5-for-7 with three RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. Mike Gizzi added three hits, three runs scored and an RBI.

In the 5-1 victory, Gettysburg jumped out to a lead and never looked back to its fourth victory in the last six games.

Mullen gave the Bullets an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a round tripper. Mullen then helped increase the margin to 2-0 in the fourth. The senior started the frame with a double and came around to score the eventual game-winning run on Justin Steele's (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) RBI single.

Gettysburg added three insurance runs in the sixth, including Mike Luteran's (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) fourth home run and second in as many games.

Ursinus finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth. Gizzi led off the inning with a double and touched home on Jay Marakovits single, but could get not closer.

The Bears only other threat in the contest came in the first. Bolinski, Marakovits and Jonathan Sheppard hit consecutive singles with two outs before Matt Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) (3-1) got Kyle Hart to fly out to right and end the inning.

Donohue allowed one run on seven hits with four strikeouts for his second consecutive victory.

In the nightcap, Ursinus jumped out early, cruising to a 7-0 win and their 14th victory of the year.

Eric Shipe led off the game with a single before Bolinski plated Shipe on a double. Marakovits increased the Bears' advantage to 2-0 with a single to score Bolinski. Ursinus added five insurances run the rest of the way.

Mike Lombardo went the distance, shutting down the Bullets on three hits with seven strikeouts. Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday against Swarthmore in doubleheader action. Start time is 1 p.m.
