GETTYSBURG, Pa. -Mike Cipolloni (Reigelsville, PA/Germantown Acad.) drove in the game-winning run to lead Gettysburg past Swarthmore 8-7 in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday. The Bullets (11-9-2, 6-3-1 CC) then won the nightcap, 9-1.
Cipolloni knocked in Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NY/Hanover Park) on a sacrifice fly in the 10th to give Gettysburg the extra-inning victory. It was the freshman's second collegiate RBI after recording an RBI in the eighth.
Ross Hempel (Marriottsville, MD/Glenelg) (1-0) pitched the final 2/3 of the 10th to pick up his first collegiate win while fellow freshman Brian Spicer (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) (1-0) shut down the Garnet (2-17, 1-9 CC) in the second game, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Joe Raciti led Swarthmore, going 3-for-6 with four RBIs and a run scored in the losing effort.
In the opening game, the Bullets grabbed an early lead before the Garnet fought back to tie the game and the two squads battled until Cipolloni's RBI in the 10th.
Gossweiler started the final frame with a hit-by-pitch and stole second to move into scoring position. Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) moved Gossweiler over to third on a bunt before Cipolloni ended the marathon with a deep drive to center field, scoring the runner.
The Garnet rallied from a 3-0 deficit to knot the game at 3 in the sixth on a bases-clearing double off the bat of Raciti, plating three runs.
Swarthmore then loaded the bases in the seventh, but hurler Ron Lettieri (Hempstead, NY/South Side) got Adam Schlossman into a double play and Wes Sconce struck out to end the threat.
Keyed by a two RBIs on single from Jody Fisher, the Garnet grabbed a 7-3 advantage after scoring four runs in the eighth.
Gettysburg answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Justin Steele (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.), Gossweiler and Cippoloni all recorded RBIs in the rally before Gossweiler touched home on a wild pitch to knotted the contest at 7.
The Bullets started the scoring in the game with a run in the first and two in the second.
Gettysburg took the momentum from the first game and erupted for nine runs on 16 hits to cruise to a 9-1 victory.
McDonald and Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) each went 3-for-3 with two RBIs while Lettieri also recorded two RBIs in the winning effort.
The duo of McDonald and Ball helped the Bullets take the early advantage with RBI singles in the second for a 2-0 lead.
Gettysburg added single runs in the fourth and the fifth before exploding for five runs in the sixth fueled by Lettieri's RBI double to take a commanding 9-0 advantage.
Swarthmore finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh on an RBI single off the bat of Raciti, but could get no closer.
The Bullets return to action on Monday at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
