Murphy hits 90-point mark in Gettysburg’s 18-10 win over McDaniel; Delauney nets first collegiate hat trick

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) scored a game-high six goals, becoming the second player in Gettysburg history to reach 90 points in a season as the fourth-ranked Bullets knocked off McDaniel 18-10 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday.

Murphy, who found the net four times in the decisive first half, also became the fifth player in program history to score at least 60 goals in a season, finishing the day with 61 markers. She needs 12 points to surpass Colleen Dunn (101 points in 1995) for the program’s single-season points record.

Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) also enjoyed a big day against the Green Terror (4-7, 3-4 CC), netting her first collegiate hat trick and dishing out one assist for a career-high four points. Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) made five of her nine saves and Ashley Froman (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) picked up five of her team-high six ground balls as Gettysburg held McDaniel scoreless over the final 20 minutes, 30 seconds of the decisive first half.

Tracy Kessler scored four goals for the Green Terror, giving her a team-best 29 for the season. Goalie Lindsay O’Steen recorded 11 saves while facing 39 shots.

Riding the program’s highest-ever national ranking, the Bullets (11-1, 5-0 CC) wasted little time justifying their No. 4 standing in the Division III polls.

A game-opening goal from Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) and two from Murphy – all in a span of 27 seconds – put Gettysburg ahead to stay at 3-0 only 1:44 into the contest. Murphy set up Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) at 5:51 to make it 4-1, but free-position goals from Kim Lowry and Kessler in less than a minute pulled McDaniel within 4-3.

The Bullets, however, controlled the rest of the half thanks to a 6-0 run and their trademark defense.

Delauney opened the stretch with a free-position goal at 11:08 and Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) finished a solo run for the first of her three tallies on the day to make it 6-3. Blankenship fed Murphy at 20:40 and Delauney netted an unassisted marker to push the lead to five. Murphy and Farrell added unassisted goals in the final six minutes of the first half to give Gettysburg a 10-3 lead at the break.

Led by a pair of caused turnovers from Murphy and Lindsay Barton (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South), the Bullets caused eight Green Terror miscues in the first half and also scooped up 18 ground balls to control the tempo.

Blankenship made it 11-3 with an unassisted goal at 31:33 before Kristin Ramey broke the McDaniel scoring drought 23 seconds later.

Murphy scored two more times to eclipse the 60-goal plateau and Farrell connected off a feed from Jess Hanson (Hunt Valley, MD/Maryvale Prep) to push the margin to 10 with 23:43 remaining.

The Green Terror could get no closer than 15-9 down the stretch, running off four straight goals over a span of 6 minutes, 29 seconds. Lowe completed her hat trick with two goals over a 24-second span with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Barton and Erin Pate (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) each finished with a team-best three caused turnovers. Blankenship added five points on two goals and three assists, and also collected a team-high five draw controls.

With her six-goal, seven-point outing, Murphy moved into third place on the program’s all-time career points list (234) and into fourth place on the career goals list (151), surpassing Pam Williams (233 points from 1985-88) and Amy Stambaugh (148 goals from 1997-2000), respectively.

Gettysburg returns to action on Thursday at Goucher. Game time is 4 p.m.
