Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Megan Murphy (Wilton,
CT/Wilton) tallied seven points to set a program record
for points in a single season, helping Gettysburg defeat Haverford
15-10 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's lacrosse action
on Saturday.
Murphy, who posted six goals and one assist
in the contest, notched her record-setting point on a goal
off a Julika Blankenship's (Crumpton, MD/Kent County)
feed 9:30 into the game to put the Bullets (13-1, 6-0 CC)
ahead for good. The senior now has 107 points on the season
to move past Colleen Dunn, who tallied 101 points in 1995.
Blankenship led the squad with two goals and a career-high
seven assists.
Mindy Walman led the Fords
(7-7, 3-4 CC) with three goals and two assists while Leigh
James netted four goals in the losing effort.
Gettysburg took control of the contest midway
through the first half and withstood a Haverford comeback
attempt to come away with its ninth straight victory against
the Fords.
With the score tied at 2, Blankenship set
up Murphy from behind the net for the go-ahead goal at 9:30
that sparked a 5-0 run in a span of 5 minutes, 32 seconds.
Blankenship then scored off a rebound 32 seconds later.
Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half
Hollows Hills East) scored off an Amy Farrell
(Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) assist in transition at
the 12:10 mark. Murphy fed Blankenship as she crossed by the
net from the left at 13:26 before Jess Hanson (Hunt
Valley, MD/Maryvale Prep.) found the twine for the
third time this season, knocking in the rebound off her own
free position shot 14:59 into the game.
Haverford rallied to score three goals at
the end of the first half and the start of the final frame
to cut the deficit to 7-5. James scored off a Walman feed
at 23:01 and Margaret Sampson found the back
of the net 45 seconds later to go into the intermission trailing,
7-4. James netted her third goal of the afternoon at 31:00.
Fueled by the Murphy-Blankenship tandem,
the Bullets scored four of the next five markers to open an
11-6 advantage and the Fords could get no closer the rest
of the way.
Farrell posted two goals and an assist while
Grassel added two goals on the day. Katie Lowe (Setauket,
NY/Ward Melville) and Jacquie O'Connor (Ridgewood,
NJ/Ridgewood) each found the twine and Kathy
Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School)
added an assist in the win.
With 107 points in her first 14 games this
year, Murphy has now collected 251 career points, five shy
of former teammate Becky Bucha (256 from 1999-2002) for second
place on the program's all-time list. Dunn's 272 career points
is the highest total in Gettysburg history.
The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at
Bryn Mawr. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
