Muhlenberg sweeps Gettysburg in CC doubleheader action

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Justin Rubenstein went a combined 4-for-7 with five RBIs and four runs scored to help Muhlenberg sweep Gettysburg in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday. The Mules (18-8-1, 9-4-1 CC) won the opening game 13-2 before taking the nightcap 11-3.

Rubenstein went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, three runs scored and a double in the 13-2 win and then added a 2-for-4 performance with three RBIs and a run scored in the final contest.

Justin Graf recorded three hits, three runs and two RBIs while Chris O'Connor and Gregg Burkhart each hurled complete-games in the winning effort.

Nathan Bashaw (Weybridge, England/Tasis England) led the Bullets (13-12-2, 8-6-1 CC) in the first game, going 4-for-4 and Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored and his fifth home run of the year in the second contest. It is the most round trippers hit in a single season since John Woods smacked six over the fence in 1998.

Muhlenberg jumped out to a 9-0 advantage after scoring nine times in the first inning on its way to a 13-2 victory.

Matt Long plated the first run of the contest with an RBI single before Brian LaRochelle followed with a RBI single of his own for a quick 2-0 lead. Adam Saddler and Aaron Regensburg then hit back-to-back RBI singles. Rubenstein drove in two runs with on a single and came around to score for the second time in the frame on Ben Carr's RBI hit. The Mules also scored two runs on errors in the inning.

Muhlenberg would tack on a pair of runs in the fourth and the sixth to open up a commanding 13-0 advantage.

Gettysburg scored twice in the seventh, but could get no closer. Chris Ferris (Scituate, MA/Boston College) knocked Brendan McDonald (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) home with a single before the squad added a run on an error.

Burkhart went the distance for the Mules, allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Muhlenberg grabbed a 5-0 advantage and never looked back to sweep the season series with the Bullets for the second straight year.

After Graf started the game with a triple, Rubenstein hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate the runner. In the next inning, Graf, Rubenstein and Carr smacked consecutive RBI singles before Rubenstein touched home on an error.

Gettysburg put three runs on the scoreboard in the third to cut the deficit to 4-3. Ferris plated Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) on a sacrifice fly and Luteran followed by drilling a two-run homer, but the Bullets could not get a runner past first base the rest of the way.

The Mules added a single run in the bottom of the inning before plating five runs their final two innings to seal the victory.

O'Connor gave up three runs on four hits with one strikeout in the complete-game victory.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday at home against Susquehanna. Game time is 3:30 p.m. Box
