WESTMINSTER, Md. - Freshmen Evan Gallant
(Lutherville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) and Chase
Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) each recorded
a hat trick to lead 12th-ranked Gettysburg past No. 10 McDaniel
10-7 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on
Tuesday.
Stewart, who posted his fourth three-goal
performance of the season, netted the eventual game-winner
with 9:45 remaining in the contest. After notching a career-high
six markers in a 15-12 loss to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday,
Gallant posted his third straight game with at least three
goals.
Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin)
found the twine once and added two assists in the winning
effort.
Rob Weaver led the Green Terror
(10-2, 6-2 CC) with two goals and one assist while Joe
Ellis and Pete Shaffer added two markers
apiece.
The Bullets (10-3, 6-2 CC) and McDaniel battled
back-and-forth for three quarters before Gettysburg erupted
for five straight goals in the fourth quarter and held on
for its sixth straight victory against the Green Terror.
Jay Mayes (Pikesville, MD/McDonogh
School) netted his second goal of the season 1:08
into the fourth, knotting the score at 6. Van Nostrand gave
Gettysburg the lead for good with an unassisted marker at
9:58 remaining.
Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport)
won the ensuing face-off and fed Stewart 13 seconds later
for an 8-6 advantage. Tripp Neville (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury)
and Matt Twombley (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan)
sealed the victory with unassisted markers at 5:12 and 2:55,
respectively.
The Green Terror, who were held scoreless
for nearly 25 minutes, found the twine at the 1:41 mark on
an unassisted goal by Weaver, but could get no closer.
Fueled by two goals from Stewart, the Bullets
jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.
Ellis scored twice in a span of 3 minutes,
31 seconds in the second quarter and Shaffer added a goal
50 seconds left until the intermission to give McDaniel a
5-4 halftime advantage.
Gallant tied the contest at 5 off a Van Nostrand
assist at the 14:25 mark in the third, but Weaver found the
twine at 11:07 to restore the Green Terror lead.
Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola
Blakefield) made 15 saves on the afternoon, including
10 in the decisive second half. Mike Korba made
eight stops in the loss.
Gettysburg returns to action on Friday in
the CC playoffs hosted by Washington (Md.) in Chestertown,
Md. The Bullets, seeded third, will rematch second-seeded
McDaniel in the day's second semifinal at 4 p.m. The Shoremen,
the No. 1 seed, will face No. 4-seeded Franklin & Marshall
at 1 p.m.
